Tournament Update

Postby Avrom » 01 May 2006, 19:18

A number of pubs around the downtown area will be offering drink and/or food specials (mostly drink specials, of course) to all players.

Just to name a few...
Buy a beer, get a shot of whiskey free
Buy one gin & juice, get another free
Free shot of tequila
Free finger food with drink at a soon-to-be-open Indian "Bollywood" bar
....
Lots more, too. All players will receive a map with the locations and specials clearly indicated. The plan is to shoot pool into Saturday evening (while enjoying the cheap drinks available at the venue) and then head out on a rotating pub crawl to take advantage of the specials being offered by our sponsors. All of the pubs are within staggering distance of one another. The final destination of the night (and the free shot of tequila) will be Sound Garden - the traditional Taichung location for watching the sun come up through a single focusing eye.

Registration fee is $500 NT per player.
Registration deadline = Friday, May 26
Register by email to bluesandcues@gmail.com
BCA 8-ball rules available online (Google: BCA 8-Ball Rules)
Play begins at noon on Saturday.
Pub crawl Saturday night.
Remaining rounds completed Sunday...delerium tremens notwithstanding.

See you there.

More Info Re: 8-Ball

We have about 20 pubs in the heart of downtown on board as sponsors.
Free cocktail, free shot of tequila, buy-1-get-1-free, free Indian finger food with drink...all sorts of stuff in tons o' pubs for the tournament players. More coming in every day...it's gonna be a GREAT pub crawl.

Went down to the venue earlier this week. Damn...it really is a beautiful pool room. Spacious (huge), comfy seating, lounge area, big-screen TV, bar, regulation snooker table...marble and mahogany everywhere.
It's called Fashion Billiards - located in the B1 level of a 45 floor office building on Chung Ming S. Rd. (between the train flyover and Fuxing Rd.).
Will be sending a map to all players who email their intent to play to bluesandcues@gmail.com

Posters for the event will be printed this weekend and distributed early next week. I'd LOVE to have some posters displayed in Taipei. If ANYONE would be willing to take a few around to the cooler venues up there (Bliss, Carnegies, Sports Pubs Unknown to Me), please send me a PM or an email and we'll work something out.

Still sorting out accomodation deals for out-of-town players. It may be prudent, if you expect to be here and require a room, to make some effort on your own behalf. I've rec'd an email from the Splendor, but presume that, even with a discount, that would still be a steep bill. Will update the thread as that sorts itself out.

NOTE TO CHASM RESORT!: I have been asked by one of Taiwan's top-ranked amateur 9-ball players if he could be my partner. I suspect it would not go over well if the tournament director shows up with a ringer, so I told him no, and begged him to stay the hell away from my tournament. I made him promise that if he plays, he brings the young lady he's teaching how to play as his partner.
You, on the other hand, would almost certainly guarantee that we were out of the tournament in two very quick rounds, so I'm gonna have to say thanks, but no thanks. HA! Just kidding.
I've got a partner. Not a ringer by any stretch of the imagniation, but I think he'll be sober enough to stay on his feet a lot longer than you will.
Speaking of which...there's lots of rum. Buy a new phone and give me a ring.

Avi, Avi, Avi, I was jesting!! Do you really think I will pay your ridiculously inexpensive entrance fee to such a MAJOR event in Taichung, nay, Taiwan, just to partner with you?
I think not! (I want a tiny chance of victory!)
I believe a little side wager is in order Mr. Bitch, Urgh, um, I mean "you bitch!" (Sorry Avi, nearly outed ya there)

See ya soon.

SALMON ! PIZZA ! BOOZE !

Postby Avrom » 13 May 2006, 00:45

Smoked. Smoked salmon. Lox. Mouthwatering, delicious pink fish. Smoked.

Nelly himself, of Nelly's Hot Smoked Salmon fame, will be at the venue serving his very own smoked salmon, homemade traditional bagels (Big Hole Bagels) and more.
Listen. I'm from Maritime Canada and I know about smoked salmon. Nelly's from the west coast, and they know salmon, too. If you like salmon (and who doesn't?), you're in for a true culinary treat if you come down to Fashion Billiards on the 27th.
It ain't often you get "pool tournament" and "culinary treat" in the same place. Nelly's salmon has to be tried to be believed.
We'll also have Poppa's Pizza delivery happening through the day - pizzas, subs, sandwiches, pita wraps... Patrick's a Canadian with years of experience in the restaurant business. He makes great food and he'll be around the venue. There's cheap drinks, and Patty's never far from cheap drinks.

On the booze front, we have about 20 or so pubs offering specials for players and friends when we head out on the town. (Deep breath) Free shot of tequila, free cocktail, $50NT Heinekin, free Bellini, free Corona, a slew of buy-1-get-1-free drinks, free finger food, $100 NT plate of wings...something special in every one of the sponsor pubs.

There's a big screen TV in the place. I plan on running The Hustler and The Color of Money. Well...maybe just The Hustler. If anyone has any suggestions - there's probably going to be some sports on that folks will want to pay attention to: NHL, NBA...it is a Saturday and it's playoff time.

Are any snooker players coming out? I'm hoping to be able to squeeze in a few frames. Opportunity doesn't present often enough these days, and I wouldn't mind rattling a few long blues in the corner jaws.

After the pub crawl...expected to wind up around zero dark early at Sound Garden (that's the free shot of tequila)...we have the perfect finale at The Dive. Parker is gonna open his sidewalk greasy spoon at 6 AM to offer the survivors a fantastic western breakfast. Omelettes, eggs, french toast, bagels, bacon, ham, sausage, salsa, OJ, coffee and HASH BROWNS. Breakfast is breakfast, but hash browns!!!

Down to the Wire

Postby Avrom » 25 May 2006, 21:08

Looks like about 25 or 30 teams semi-confirmed. Still room for that many again, and y'all can feel free to show up at the venue (FASHION Billiards, 760 Chung Ming S. Rd., B1 Level - Head south on Chung Ming, it's between the first underpass and Fuxing Rd. - twin 45 story towers, can't miss'em) and join the fun.

HOPING to get things underway around noon on Saturday, but it being a Saturday and pool players being a bunch likely to be out late on Friday, the start time is adjustable as needs be. Show up and jump in.

Recaping the food and drink: Nelly (of Nelly's Hot Smoked Salmon) will be on site with salmon and traditional style bagels. Patty (of Poppa's Pizza) will be making deliveries - pizzas, pitas, subs. The venue will be selling beer, whiskey, rum and vodka, and the Pub Crawl Saturday night has $1500 NT in FREE drinks waiting for each player at various joints around the canal district.

See you there.

While I won't be playing, do you mind if I turn up and take some photo's for an hour or two?

It's not what I'd usually photograph, but I've always thought a big pool comp would be a great thing to shoot. And I'll let you have a few photo's for future advertising if you want.

Outcome

Postby Avrom » 30 May 2006, 18:05

Well...it'll be a cold goddamn day before I try to organize an event for ex-pats in Taichung again.

Had expected 40, hoped for 60 or more...eight (8) people showed up to play.

We had beer and mixed drinks going for $70NT all day, Nelly's Hot Smoked Salmon at the venue, free tables, a chance to win cash, and $1500 NT in FREE drinks for all players in the pub crawl...eight people showed up.

Frankly, I don't understand it. Apparently some folks would rather drape a sheet over themselves and spend $150/drink at a toga party.

In any case, those who did show up had a pretty good time. Thanks to 24Seven Matt Flint for taking charge. Yours Truly, disappointed at the turnout, proceeded to get blistering drunk (first Heineken at 10:30 AM...never without the next one until departure around 9:00 Saturday evening).
Matt organized a singles, winner-take-all format and managed through to the end.

The winner was a ringer from Taipei named Shao Wei. He and his pal, Oliver, rented a car and drove down for the tournament. Sorry, fellas...hope you had a good time. IMO, you should have had more to drink.

Thanks, also, to the locals who came down to the venue later in the day to enjoy some drinks and shoot some pool with us. It was nice to have some extra bodies around to help with all that booze.

If anyone wants to get together for an evening of pool, let me know...there's still alot of booze left down there.

Bleh.
