Forumosans,
My American friend desperately needs to divorce his mentally unstable, verbally and physcially abusive Taiwanese wife of 20+ years. His wife had been threatening him with divorce papers and subsequent deportation for the past 15 years. Why did he wait so long? He wanted to wait until his daughter grew up and went off to college and he also had the JFRV through being married and didn't know how to go about getting an APRC to prevent being forced to leave Taiwan and abandoning the last 30 years of his life here in Taiwan. Also, he has substantial property and business interests and is not about to just sign divorce documents giving everything to her just because she tells him to! Of course everything is in her name based on the the discriminatory laws in Taiwan as it pertains to foreigners! Anyway, I processed the APRC for him and the day after he got it, he moved out. So, without telling her that he has an APRC, he says, "Fine....bring me the paperwork and I'll sign it and you can choke on it." Now, she refuses to divorce!! Looks like it's just been a nasty power play ruse all this time.
So, the divorce will not be consenual. He will not be able to provide any proof or documentation as to any of the grounds for statutory divorce under Taiwan's Civil Code 1052. He just wants to say, "Hey, I hate her. I've hated her for a long time, she's abusive, living with her is intollerable and now that I've got my APRC, I want the F*** OUT!"
Can anyone recommend a good divorce attorney for him? Anybody have any good personal experience with a divorce attorney? I know we can just call any lawyer in the book, but I would like to consult with one that someone else has had some experience with and has faithfully represented the interests of the non-Taiwanese partner in a divorce case!
Thanks,
Northcoast Surfer
p.s. I've already found the list of attorneys provided by the A.I.T. at the link below. However, I was looking for anyone with some personal experience with a specific attorney or law firm.
