British kids and the Taiwanese learning experience

Postby tomthorne » 11 Oct 2009, 22:27

http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/200 ... vate-tutor

Middle class kids getting 6 hours a day cram school and private tutoring, starting at 5am.

Loretta - you're on the wrong continent. The 11-plus is the future! One of the private tutors claims to be earning more than a head teacher. I forsee a mass exodus of teachers in Asia back to the yook.

It also completely misses the point that most kids at private schools have come up through the prep school system. I went in through the 11plus and didn't even speak the same language as the bleedin' toffs. It was a bad experience all round despite my awesome ranking I left and went to a comprehensive school about 15 months after starting.

It's from The Grauniad, of course it misses the point.

To be fair I think the article is referring more to parents fighting to get their kids into the few remaining grammar schools. In the present economic climate the privates will take pretty much anyone who's able to pay.
