Taiwanese Areas of Vancouver?

Postby shawn_c » 09 May 2010, 08:31

Hi Everyone,

The wife and I are thinking of a move to Vancouver (from Toronto) and are wondering if anyone knows the areas of Vancouver that have the most Taiwanese population? Legend goes that there is an area of Vancouver where you'll only hear Taiwanese spoken on the streets...

Thanks in advance,
Shawn

P.S. If anyone wants to know, the areas in Toronto with the heaviest concentration of Taiwanese is North York, around Yonge St. & Sheppard Ave., and Markham, around Steeles Ave. E. & Warden Ave. (Markham area having more than just Taiwanese... includes HK, Mainland, etc.).

Lots of Taiwanese in North Burnaby. Also a fair amount in Surrey (Fraser Heights), although the Chinese and Koreans have "taken over" many areas.

Google search 台灣村 for the greater Vancouver area.

Uhh... yeah... I did the search, and the second result is this thread (http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=%E5 ... =&gs_rfai=)! It's a Mobius Strip.

Chewycorns... although Richmond has a lot of Chinese in general... are those people mostly from HK, China, or Taiwan? In Toronto, although there are T&T Supermarkets around... they're mainly filled with non-Taiwanese Chinese, although of course, there are still some Taiwanese.

Thanks for the replies :)

T&T was started by a well-known Taipei news personality. In the stores in Vancouver, you can buy pretty much all the Taiwan tea brands, 7-11 chips, crackers, condiments, and other non-perishable food items that are staples in Taiwan.....my family sure enjoys shopping there every time where are in Richmond or downtown.

Richmond also has the best night market in Vancouver that is open during the summer. You're right though---in terms of demographics, there are probably slightly more Honkies and Mainlanders.

Really? Which person is this? I heard that T&T was half owned by Uni-President (responsible for bringing 7-11, Starbucks, Mister Donut, etc. to Taiwan) and some other American company.

But yeah, we go there, too, and you can find all the stuff. The two in Toronto that we've been to are getting dirty and crowded, though. In fact, they are really packed.

Night market, eh? Is it seven days a week? That is excellent news, thanks!

Haha... we have enough Honkies in Toronto... although the Mainlanders have taken over. They ride bicycles, and the Honkies drive BMWs.

Give me more info., Chewycorns! What about the legend of an area in Vancouver where everyone speaks Taiwanese and you don't even need Mandarin to get around?

There are about 8 T&T stores in Greater Vancouver now. Started by a Taiwanese, but sold to Loblaw last year.

Again, Fraser Heights has an area that the local Taiwanese call "Taiwan village", although the numbers have shrunk. I'm off for badminton this afternoon with a bunch of them, and we do a fair number of other activities together as well. North Burnaby still has a fair number of Taiwanese. The majority are Mainlanders now; and there are many Koreans as well. Since we moved back (2 years) I have not heard anything about an area where you are only likely to hear Taiwanese. I can ask today.

We haven't made it out to the Richmond night market(s) yet - most of our group says that they are not "authentic", but that may have more to do with the fact that it isn't Taiwan authentic, or that they are used to different things after living here for 15-20 years. I use plural because there was a dispute between two of the promoters, and one was trying to get licensed to start up a competing night market. Still like to get out there this summer.
