But still, you are right about Mandarin rap is just rich kids aping American/Chinese cultural influences. All those Chinese historical themed "rap" by Jay Chou and others to appease the Chinese market are pretty much crap with no soul....

example: Jay Chou's Bencaogangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica)

The lyrics goes:

If Huatuo lives again and can cure all xenophilia. Then people from other states will come to learn Chinese, and upsurge my ethnic/nationalistic feeling....

pandering soulless crap.
Don't confuse me with your reasonableness.

Tao (from Lanyu) rap. The song is called Formosa.

A Hakka/Holo group called 拷秋勤 (Kou tsou tsing, Holo for jerk offs) has pretty great raps as well.

Here comes the civil revolt II - in Holo, Mandarin and English

Your are called Taiwanese - in Holo and Hakka

There's more than one culprit by Xiaoren. Best Mandarin rap in my opinion.... at least it's about something real.

Thx, Hansioux. Pretty interesting. Given all the "s" "sh" "z" and "zh" sounds in Mandarin, I've always found Mandarin rap to have kind of a "hissing" kind of quality. Kind of like parseltongue for Harry Potter fans.
