Music for Religion & Spirituality

Postby Dr. McCoy » 01 Sep 2010, 18:15

I don't think we have one of these threads here. I hope this can be a respectful look at music from all faiths and points of view. Everything from Lennon's Imagine to Harrison's My Sweet Lord. Some things that may serve to center you, or to pick you up when you are low. Solace, hope, reverence...

We miss you Jesus. Come back soon.

I'm not a big fan of chorale music, but of course that one is very famous and rousing.
This one is very spiritual to me. Everything Bach did was for his church, and the name of it makes me think of the story of when Jesus was born and the angels woke the shepherds. Sleepers Awake! A Voice is Calling

It's a popular classical guitar piece as well. But it sounds better on a pipe organ. I thought most of the ones on Youtube are too fast. I like this one:

And then this one.

Great idea for a thread, Doc.
Yes, Sandman, Handel's Messiah is probably the pinnacle. But it's such a broad genre.

I'm starting with The Staple Singers, I'll Take you there.

I'm not sure if this first one is about heaven, or if it's just about some pub named, "Heaven."

When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best

Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
Gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best

Never been a sinner I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He's gonna set me up with
The spirit in the sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best

I can't listen to that Clapton one. Too many memories of my wee sweet Caitlin. I've never considered that one to be about heaven or even spirituality. Just plain, raw, unvarnished loss and pain. Just reading the title makes my eyes hot. :(

If we would only give, just once, the same amount of reflection to what we want to get out of life that we give to the question of what to do with a two weeks' vacation, we would be startled at our false standards and the aimless procession of our busy days -- DOROTHY CANFIELD FISHER
