Point system for foreigners

A point system is a very good thing. It's why immigration has been extremely successful in countries like Australia or Canada, but an unmitigated disaster in Europe. A point system keeps the riff-raff out to a large extent.

I think this is a poor choice of wording. It gives highly qualified immigrants an easier chance to get settled. The riff raff still gets in.

the problem will come when they start to decide what should count and not count as a point and try to reinvent the wheel on this.

Taiwanese love to copy something and then reinvent it, sometimes with little or no success and or even end up making it into a royal F*ckup .

The riff raff gets in the same ways that they have always gotten in. Taiwan doesn't have a system like this and there is plenty of foreign riff raff on this island.

Taiwan has very few spots for white collar foreign professionals, most of them migrated to China starting 15 years ago. Unlike Japan, Taiwan is not going to offer foreigners top dollar to work middling jobs.

There already is a prerequisite system in place here. 2 years experience in your field before you can work here, and having a degree from an English speaking country before you can teach here. It seems to work ok, unless you are one of the tired old fucks on Forumosa.com crying about how the poor behavior of Saffie and Canuck teachers here in Taiwan is affecting how people treat you.

I know I am pedantic, but this above sentence is only true if you want to teach English.
I teach other languages at universities and nobody ever asked me to show a degree from a English speaking country.

I don't know about Taiwan but this has greatly increased my interest in Japan. Taiwan would have to do a lot more than have a point system to attract high skill foreign talent. I was more than happy to live in Taiwan as an English teacher but as a web developer I'm not sure it's my cup of tea.

The current system is pretty easy, one or two years work experience and a degree , heck it's great if you just want to be sponsored for work!
Problem is the low pay and finding companies who want to hire you at the right price, and the crap work conditions.
Even the hard working japanese have at least double the number of public holidays of Taiwan and of course pay is pretty good there.
