Children's commercial rate

Postby baberenglish » 07 Jul 2012, 07:54

My son, after auditioning, has been offered a part in a TV commercial with a large company in Taiwan. There will be himself, along with a mom and dad. Everything is legit. Trust me. I am anal about this. I have seen the 'script' and it is just basic interaction(no English) in a general family atmosphere. My son has done a few ads here and there(no TV) before and has slowly gotten his pay raised based on the amount he has done. I am waiting to hear back from the agent about the pay next week after the final schedule and budget is drawn up. Now with a child in commercials, you don't work on the 'model card' (basically being signed to an agent-quasi union) system that adult models have to use here. With children it's a bit more loose because most children only do a few before being considered too old or lose their cuteness factor. So my question is what would be the going rate for a commercial like this for a child?

modeling/acting rates

The basic rate depends on the budget assigned to the advertising. It should increase for each exposed media (TV, internet, print-ad), each country airing the commercial and each year on air. Other factor to consider is the time shooting the gig. Your son should expect a minimum payment per hour and a guaranteed minimum income.

A big issue affecting your final payment is the agency that got you the case. Some of them take a huge commission, seizing foreigners' inexperience, thus you end with short-money for a big case. Some agencies may ask you to sign exclusive contract trying to eliminate competence and reduce your negotiation power, what affects your future payments. You shouldn't give up your legitimate rights without a proper compensation (cash).
