Jobs For Non-Native English Speakers

Postby sovietica » 23 Oct 2010, 03:51

I wanted to know if there are any jobs (legal ones) for people that do not come from a native English speaking country. Even though I am getting a BA in English, and also a degree in Education, I know that the chances of finding a legal teaching job are close to none, but I am still hoping that i can find a legal job with those credentials.

(i never knew that I would get embarrassed by writing smth online, but yes, I am embarrassed, so please excuse any kind of grammatical errors that i may have done and thank you for your answers)

Anything but teaching English legally -unless you are married to a Taiwanese- but you can teach your Native tongue, work in business, translation, etc... hopefully, with a two-year experience backup and any other requisites they may set.

If any new arrival needs assistance in Taipei, I can provide it in exchange for Star Trek or Supernatural (the TV series) stuff or other sci-fi materials. Let me know what help you need by PM, along with what you have to offer in return. And yes, I am serious.

What work can we do?

Postby Kenquan » 11 Nov 2010, 01:24

Hello!
I guess this topick maybe has already been made in a way, but I felt I needed to write it again in spite of that
Me and a friend of mine(both from Germany) want to go to Taiwan to stay there and work
We 've already tried to by using hundreds of sites, but havent found anything yet. We also sent mails to Language schools for teaching assitant, and also wrote to hotels. But no one replied us, (do we need to write them again?)
Just a little about our education:We have both made an apprenticeship for foreignlanguages correspondent. My Friend only had English. I had English-Japanese. I am 24 my friend is 23
he speaks Beginner Chinese, I am about intermediate.
As we both dont have work yet, we wanted to fly to Tawain to keep searching there.
Could you maybe help us with visa there? We know we need visitor visa, and wanted to change it to resident visa as as soon as we found work. Is that possible?Or do we need to do get this before going to Taiwan? Can we apply for the visa in Taiwan?Or do we have to leave the country then like going to hongkong, for a while? If yes, whats the procedure?
Would anyone have an idea about this? Cause we already went to a travel agency, and were told, the flights couldnt be reserved.
could you give us some advice about this?
Thanks really for any help!!
Kenquan

What kind of job are you looking for? You can't teach English you know.
“Everywhere else in the world is also really old” said Prof. Liu, a renowned historian at Beijing University. “We always learn that China has 5000 years of cultural heritage, and that therefore we are very special. It appears that other places also have some of this heritage stuff. And are also old. Like, really old.”

Highly unlikely you will find work in Taiwan unless you and your friend are engineers. What kind of work do you do in Germany?

I understand there had been non-native English speakers in the past in Taiwan teaching English, most likely illegally, but the market seems to get tighter and it might be really difficult to find such thing, if one were to look for illegal employment which I am not advocating.

But Englishy teaching is not really my turf, so I am just repeating what I heard here on the boards.
Or not.

So was it a volunteer position or did they owe back pay?

Goethe institute is quite expensive, especially in Germany. It's hard to believe that they would only hire volunteer teacher.
