I find all of the youth fashion here a little cartoonish or attempting to be too wholesome.

Are these 'tomboys' actually lesbians?
Or are they just conforming like many do and calling themselves that?

Are the ones who go with them real lesbians too?

When comparing them to the transgender or transsexual male to female, things are a little different.
The ladyboys of Thailand for example are seen by many as a third sex (which is how I see them).
I don't class anyone who takes a fancy to a ladyboy as 'gay', but a 'P' (or a 'dee' as they are called in Thailand) is classed as a lesbian for taking a fancy to a a person whose only feminine part (from their looks) is the genitalia.
I haven't got a clue about bedroom gymnastics between the T and P.
Are roles 'usually' like that of a hetro couple?

Homosexuality seems to be too wide a description. Almost anyone who doesn't fit the hetro criteria must be gay in many peoples eyes.

A hairy man with a beard having a partner that looks like himself - not a 'man' dressed as and living as a woman is a same sex relationship.

Should I think the same with women? So two P's together is a same sex relationship.

There are a ton of butch-looking Taiwanese girls here. Often walking (sometimes holding hands, but I feel like that's more of an Asian-girl thing) with another girl who looks really femme/cutesy.

Is this a fashion statement thing (cropped hair, boyish clothes, no makeup, etc), or are there really that many lesbians walking around with their girlfriends? I don't tend to think of Tainan as "sexually liberated"...

I don't tend to think of Tainan as "sexually liberated"...

I've always found Tainan to be fairly lesbian friendly, in that there are far more obviously female homosexual couples around than male. from the girls I know that are lesbians, their families aren't too accepting, and one of my best female homosexual friends here has been totally ostracized by her family (except for her brother and sister), but she doesn't care anymore as she's happy with the lifestyle she's chosen, and she's happy with herself.
Other than family, these couples don't seem to have any problems on the street or with people in general in Tainan.

yup.You have to choose whether you are a T or P. 9 years ago people freaked out if you said you were neither, but lately they don't really care. Sad thing about T's is that they wear bras that hide their breasts.

In other countries you also get your stone butches and femmes, but they aren't the majority like over here.

I stumbled upon a lesbian forum page based in Thailand a few weeks ago and there were some western women complaining about the Asian roles in 'lesbain' relationships - butch and femme and that the femme's in general are scared to touch pussy.
