I recently took a job in Xindian and will be moving back to Taiwan in July. We are trying to base where where we get a house on 1. proximity to my job (up in the mountains between Xindian and Ankeng) and 2. where our 6 year old bilingual son will be going to school
We favor more experiential, student-centered kinds of schools and our son has had plenty of bad experiences in private pre-schools and kindys in Taiwan. We are looking to avoid him being exposed to shaming and emotional abuse (which I've often seen at buxibans, especially from the "Chinese Teachers") and excessive workload/testing pressure (which is often a problem at public schools).
We can't afford international school tuition at this time, and many private bilingual schools look pretty dodgy so public schools seem like the best option at this time to at least ensure qualified non-abusive teachers. However, they get off early so we would also need some kind of after school care that is better than just your run of the mill cram school.
With that in mind, does anyone has any experience with public schools and after school program options in the Xindian, Ankeng or Beida/Sanxia areas? Are there any schools that are a bit more progressive, maybe along the "Mountain Schools" kind of model? Does anyone belong to any of those small private tutoring groups that hire teachers to teach customize after school classes?
We have found a public mountain school on the way to my work and a private experimental school in Wulai, but both are kind of secluded/logistically difficult.
From reading on here, the Nangang Bilingual Public Elementary school also looks promising, and I have some resources in Sanxia where we lived before, but both of those would make a tough commute for me.
I know these are pretty specific needs but I'm just trying to cast a wide net before we arrive in July.
