Quorn in Taiwan?

2) Please append your request to an existing thread if you find a stale one, rather than starting a new one.

3) Please post separately  for each search item, not one thread for "olives and sour cream". Two threads, one for each. This makes it much easier for the moderator to merge your thread with an existing one, if any.

Quorn in Taiwan?

Postby Arteta » 23 Jul 2012, 05:40

I'm looking at moving later this year if all goes well and I'd like to know if we're ever going to be able to find Quorn (or anything similar) without paying extreme prices. I'm fine with eating meat but it's the girlfriend who's against it and it may be a problem moving here if we cannot get any.

I've never heard of Quorn and I haven't eaten any meat in over 15 years. Googling tells me it's a meat substitute - well, Taiwan has plenty of those, usually made from tofu / soy protein. It's very easy for a vegetarian to live well here, plenty of eating options and lots of veg eateries / restaurants.

I'd never heard of this either until it started appearing on the menu at my staff canteen on "meatless mondays". Taiwan has a lot of vegetarians due to the strength of Buddhism here. You just have to learn the characters for vegetarian and you'll be able to spot vege restaurants in many locations.
I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific.

Hi Arteta, and welcome to the forum! :)

There are oodles of vegetarian restaurants here, and every supermarket has a vegetarian section. Have a look here for more info.

Never seen Quorn here, though it might be somewhere in Taipei, Taichung (and will be expensive).
Still, veggie 'mince' is easily available, and there is a wide range of tofu -based meat substitutes.

I do sometimes miss the Quorn pieces though.

Gluten (protein of wheat, fried or deep-fried) and soy protein is the food of choice for Taiwan's vegetarians ... and boiled mixed rice/cereals

Quorn (brandname) and other manufacturers use fungi (Mycoprotein, mould) to produce imitation meat flavored-up with spices and herbs, natural and artificial flavors and colorants actually making it taste ... reasonable

The product is dried and mixed with egg albumen, which acts as a binder. It is then textured, giving it some of the grained character of meat, and pressed either into a mince resembling ground beef; forms resembling chicken breasts, meatballs, and turkey roasts; or chunks resembling diced chicken breast.

There goes the pure vegetarian base ...

Anyways, I tasted this already in the mid-late 1980's as I was working as a photographer's assistant and had to do a shoot of the product in Belgium ... not bad, but not exciting ...
