Wow -- $6,000 is way to low. You had better bring some document or other evidence to prove that you can only afford this much.

I bet you $30,000 is as low as they'll go. If I were hit by someone, especially someone who had been drinking, I'd be demanding $100,000+.

You say you want to only offer NT$6,000? Do you really believe that is an acceptable amount?

Yes.

You are absolutely right about as low as they will go. As for 100,000 NT, having now been through some of the process, you would be laughed out of the mediation process :roflmao:, unless you brought serious documentation that you had missed that much work and had really suffered. They lacked a lot of documentation, and the mediator immediately halved the amount they were asking for. I could have easily ridden off on the girl and probably would have gotten away with it, but I didn't. I did the right thing and stayed, because I was worried she was more seriously hurt. But she quickly lost that simpathy when I saw her walking around the police station and I knew she was going to press charges. 100,000 NT over scraped knees? That would truly be a frivolous lawsuit.

Wll is playing it right, it's about negotiation and setting expectations at the start. He should also remember he got away with not paying 36000 NTD minimum fine for DUI on a scooter.

I never heard there is a minimum fine of 36,000 NTD for a DUI on a scooter. I have heard that there is a maximum fine of 150,000 NT. I was told that my payment to the girl would probably count as my fine and that I will probably get community service.

Yes. And since it is community service, all the police in the area will know that I am there.

You might suggest doing a free class for all the kids of the coppers who busted you. That way, if they happen to stop you DUI in the future they'll just wave you on with a smile and a wink.

That's a good idea. I might give it a try.

Actually, I don't know quite what happened to me. I was taken in and questioned by the police, had to spend the night in jail because it was Sunday, and was asked a few questions by the DA the morning after. My legal advice told me I should have been written a ticket, but that never happened.
