I think that is how I managed to hold town one job in a buxiban. My boss who can't even manage to pay me on time always wants me to do her a favor.

To run a cram school school like Davids or Global Village you just need start up capital. it is a franchise.
Pay them cash, they'll do it up, give you textbooks, etc and off you go. You just need to find a place, staff and students.

Tempting. But GVO in Tainan has already closed a branch and David's is suffering. Might have to look into another area, but I agree, a franchise for a guy like me is probably a good way to go, at least to start with.

I'm sure with that though, you'd be exchanging one form of silliness for a whole batch that you never thought possible.

Probably true. No idea. But I can see how that could be the case.

don't know about the school operations side, on my side of biz, bismarck is correct. it is sometimes silly to the point you will scratch the head and try to figure out how did they think of that? in Taiwan, it is best to have a partner or wife to help. if not, a good local CPA would be advisable.

if you have mega bucks to start a biz, this won't apply. before you start a business, ask your self; am I willing to go six months with out a pay check? can I pay someone knowing that my pay will be half of what I just paid? (or less) or would I be more happy getting a paycheck every week?
owning a business requires sacrifices. some more than others and others of different kind. If the business is your hart beat, and your breath, the sacrifices will come easy.

Sometimes I wonder if you actually live in Taiwan or work in the ESL industry. this is an excellent way to lose a lot of money. the hardest part is finding the students. The trend throughout Taiwan is that the established buxibans are struggling to maintain their current student numbers. Setting up a new buxiban is extremely risky.

Another example
No teaching job in Taiwan is long term. Most staff turnover is usually one year which are those who come to Taiwan to work and travel and have fun.
Long term are those that decide to run their own company.

both of these are true but a lot of my friends are here with a 2-4 yr plan to return home. In addition to that there are a lot of young teachers that don't have the capital or management skills to start/run a business. Not everything is as cut and dry as you make it sound.
