Water Balloons

Postby Whole Lotta Lotta » 23 Jul 2012, 20:54

I am working in the mornings doing a summer camp at a local elementary school. I have worked at summer camps in the states and water balloons were always a part of daycamp activities. I told the school that I was going to do some water balloon activities before I did them and they told me it was OK as long as we picked up the balloons after ourselves. We had a big waterfight today and all the students loved it. After it was all over the school told me that they didn't really like me doing a waterfight with them because they thought it was a waste of water. Excuse me, but it was a hot summer day and the students really liked it. Can anybody tell me what is so wrong with having a water balloon fight at a summer camp? Especially when you told them beforehand you were going to do it and they said it was OK :ponder: .

Sounds like the convenient excuse. Perhaps they were afraid someone would drown.

Yep - and you need a cordoned-off area and lifeguards with whistles, who are wearing bright orange boiler suits on standby. You obviously didn't plan this thoroughly enough and you put a lot of children at risk.

All the students need a swim cap, goggles, and form fitting speedos. How dare you allow water to touch their bodies without this protection. Just the thought of it.... sheeeesh.

I had a kid a few weeks ago with a little accident. All of a sudden there was water on the floor by his seat. I asked him to stand up and it appeared like he peed his pants. Then he reaches into his front pocket and starts pulling out the remains of a water balloon. The whole front of his pants was soaked, as was the seat and the floor.

I did the right thing, I immediately made all the kids don their swimming caps and goggles for protection.
Why not???

If you are what you eat, then I guess that makes me "fast, cheap, and easy"!

I think another mistake I made in all this was to not fully explain what the students would be learning from all this. I thought it was enough that the students would get a chance to cool off after all the other things I was teaching them beforehand. Instead I should have thoroughly drilled them on the English they use in water fights and followed it up with a test. Stupid me  .

Just do the Taiwanese thing. "Paisay, Paisay, I didn't think, sorry, sorry, thank you for telling me..."

Sneakily get all your students to write reports saying how much they loved the water balloon activity.

And have another epic water balloon fight next year :D

The water balloon fight was epic. And I would not take it as a good sign if some of my students weren't trying to get me wet (which they definitely were).

You've inspired me to have a waterballoon fight tomorrow for my junior high kids. Thanks!
Fortunately I can pretty much do whatever I want.

You are lucky that you can do whatever you want. And I am glad that I have influenced one person to break up the monotony of teaching junior highers just sitting in a class all day :) .
