Taiwan Refuses Political Asylum to Chinese Dissidents

Didn't the current Taiwan government promise to abide by accepted human rights practices?

Taipei - A Chinese dissident, who unsuccessfully sought political asylum in Taiwan and presently stranded in Thailand, is seeking international help to avoid deportation to China, a Taiwan religious group said on Monday.

Jia Jia, 55, Secretary-General of the Science & Techonolgy Experts Association of Shanxi, has just been interviewed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCFR) in the hope of gaining refugee status and finding a third country to accept him, a group spokesman told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa by phone.

The ROC authorities probably had a look at the case and decided he was an economic migrant.

Taiwan does not "refuse" asylum. Simply put, Taiwan has absolutely no laws for asylum and refugees, meaning Taiwan can not provide anybody with anything resembling asylum or grant refugee status.

There's a refugee legislation floating around but I don't think it's likely to pass.

Whats that got to do with deciding somebody should not be accepted as a refugee. After all Taiwan isnt a signatory to any UN conventions.

Many countries refuse to give refugee status to wannabe refugees. That does not mean that they have commited any breaches of human rights practices.

Canada loves refugees as well.. By the way under UN guidlines a refugee must first apply where they land. Not just decide to choose a third country because it suits their preferences.
