Maokong. Some lovely leafy terraces overlooking the city in the hills or tucked away in some green valley.

Bitan. Whole row of outdoor seating overlooking the river.
“Everywhere else in the world is also really old” said Prof. Liu, a renowned historian at Beijing University. “We always learn that China has 5000 years of cultural heritage, and that therefore we are very special. It appears that other places also have some of this heritage stuff. And are also old. Like, really old.”

Eddy's Cantina in Tianmu.

Mini Diner near Dapinglin MRT.

I personally don't understand why anyone would want to sit outside in the humidity if there is A/C inside.

You must definitely come from Singapore :)

When there is a little cool breeze, after big showers in the day, like today for example, it is very nice to chill outside. This is why I was saying "the food comes second". I was on Clarke Quay in Singapore this week, this is where I'd like to go in the evening in Taipei... and Singapore is much warmer and humid than here so yes, there I prefer to be inside with A/C on (even if Singapore has some place where they actually cool the outside with A/C).

Tony Diamond in Tianmou has one of the nicer outdoor seating areas I've found here.

Joyce Cafe (the one near Hooters) has a posh outdoor seating area (with prices to match).

Luna has a not-so-scenic but relatively private terrace area, with just one table iirc.

Then there's that string of generic restaurants/cafes on the western slope of Yangming Shan coming up from Tianmou. Can't remember the name of the one I visited, and didn't bother with the food, but the terrace was spacious with 2 or 3 different levels and the view spectacular.

There is one place called "The Top" that has great views of the city and some german beer on tap. The food is mostly local Taiwanese fare, all very good, but the layout of the restaurant (a hybrid Balinese villa kind of thing with canopies and sofas) and the views are worth the trip up alone.

ck is right. The Top is the best up there. Just stick with the local basics like 3 cup chicken and you will be happy. The view/seating is worth the price of admission by itself. Remember, order Taiwanese food.

The Tianmu branch closed some time ago.

Alleycats HuaShan has an excellent patio. 2 in fact. One is nicely shaded for most of the day.

You won't catch me dead on Carnegies Patio ever again. I hate that place. Crap food, pretentious atmosphere, rude management. Nah, I'll not.

Bongos has a covered patio, and reasonably priced fare. Not much in the way of people watching.

I'll 2nd On Tap and the upper balcony at Toasteria 3.

And for night life on the outside, you can't beat Myst's huge patio. Easily the best spot to be on New Years Eve. Warner Village, above Starbucks.

urodacus wrote:in Beitou above hell valley there's a great outdoor restaurant with a great view over Beitou/Danshui (well, it looks nice at night, OK?)

cuisine is buffet featuring Mongolian BBQ which you can do yourself or give to the man.

And it's not too expensive, and I forget the name.

nonetheless, it is 90% better than any of the previous mentions which all feature a 20 x 20 foot "terrace" (read 'stoop') in the middle of the city.

This sounds nice! Where is it? What is it's name or address? I want to go to Beitou to check out the hot springs, so this would be great to go see toooooo...if it really exists. Cuz right now all it is is imagination or a wild goose chase wandering thru alleyways and rooftops looking for the mysterious outdoor restaurant with a view. Thanks for the help cuz!
