WCIF an upscale, nice Japanese restaurant in Taipei?

Postby Quarters » 10 Jul 2012, 15:08

Looking for a nice upscale, romantic to semi romantic, Japanese restaurant in Taipei for a special occasion. Any ideas? If you have links to restaurant home pages, that would be awesome! Thanks.
FYI: Not Mitsui...a bit too pricey.

tiny swish place in Andong Jie area, behind the temple that fronts onto the park and in the lane that connects back to Civic.

Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT exit 1, turn 90degrees right out of the escalators, follow your nose till you see the temple (pass the park), and then the lane is ahead on the right of the temple.

Best directions EVER.

Ha! Your directions are exactly how I need them...give me street names and i will be lost forever...I do much better by landmarks and nose following. Thanks for your help! I will go check it out.

Another good place I have heard of is "Dozo"
Has anyone been there?

Dozo can be fun, but hardly romantic. It's bustling and loud, especially when the dodo drummers put on their show.

I went to a place called Hana Bi, which brands itself as a japanese tapas restaurant and was very impressed. I thought I had just stumbled on a newly opened gem and was surprised when the waitress told me they have been open for five years! How did I not know of it?!?

Great decor and ambience, though a lot of the seating is on higher bar chairs and raised tables. Menus are in Chinese and Japanese only. Look it up. It's on Zhongshan N. Rd section 2, Lane 20, #1-3. It's in the lane just north of the Spot Cinema.

Is the one on the fourth floor of the Q Square posh enough? Or is that Mitsui?

My girlfriend and I passed another one that was ridiculously expensive and sold the more classical Japanese motif -- seiza-sitting and the lot. I decided to pass. She and I opted for the discount sushi chain that's cropped up around Taipei Main Station and Danshui.

Hana bi is very good.

Also, Yiweiwu off Yanji St. is outstanding as well. They know their wine here as well. And sake. Neither of these places are cheap.

You killed us at "not Mitsui".

Not much to add for an "upscale, nice Japanese restaurant in Taipei" but for saying that.

Spend the $10,000 and have a great time in Taipei at Cuisine M as far as food goes.

Like I said: go to M for dinner, dessert on the enclosed patio, walk across the street to W for drinks on 10, and then go to your room upstairs at W.

Mathematics has never been so simple. The result is always a positive integer.

Try Sumie at 4F of Sanwant Hotel.

There is a nice little sushi bar called Suzuhuji (鈴藤), that's one of my family's favorite.

I used to walk by there every day. Never tried it, but it looked nice.
