cheese steaks - (a restaurant)

Postby elektronisk » 11 Aug 2010, 15:48

A new place opened up in Xinmending last week called "cheese steaks". They serve, you guessed it, cheesesteaks. They also have an "American Hamburger", a fried chicken wrap, and a tuna salad sandwich.

The place is across the street from the Eslite building. The cheesesteak is $135 and the hamburger is $125 individually. They also have combos with fries and soda.

The setup is a glassed-in kitchen and a walk up order window. I couldn't see them preparing/cooking since a crowd was pushing up to the window. After ordering you can take it upstairs or away. On a chalkboard outside it says something like "I wanted to bring a piece of Philly to you. Hope you like it. Dave."

After looking at the menu and seeing that the hamburger is constructed in the unorthodox manner like Burger Stop (vegetables under the meat) I was wondering if this was the same Dave. I don't think so.

The cheesesteak was ok but didn't have much flavor. I thought they forgot the cheese until I got to the end and finally tasted some. Yes, it is the melted nacho style cheese but not cheese whiz (although I like swiss HORROR better on my cheesesteak). It was nice to have a hot sandwich but I would have liked more flavor.

The hamburger was disappointing so I ate less than half. It also didn't have much flavor and was slightly sweet possibly due to the onions.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go there but if you are in the area it makes a change from the other fast food places. Since they have only been open about a week I'll try the cheesesteak again to give them another chance.

Could you be a little more specific? Across which street? Towards the Red Theatre or the pedestrian mall. I'm headed there tonight and want to try it. Thanks. Oh, also, is the sign in Chinese or English?

It is on Kunming street. If you are taking the MRT come out exit 6 (across the street from Red Building) and walk straight ahead down Chengdu road until you get to Kunming. Cross Kunming intersection and turn right and it is about a block down on the left hand side (Eslite is on the right). You should see a crowd there. It is across from the hospital/skateboarding area.

The sign is in English and Chinese.

Has anyone been to this place lately? It's called Phillycheesesteaks, Kunming street, number 102.

Just got some publicity from them, and my coworkers want to try it. The sandwich itself does not look that attractive but I found the text quite cute:

You don't have to fly to the US to experience the great taste of Philadelphia!...
Dve built his restaurant on two principles, to serve the best , most authentic Philadelphia food, and to prepare the food in a clean, see/through kitchen.
:D

Considering the greasy spoon joints where I ate those in Philly, that takes points off for authenticity. :roflmao:

lol that's the same place as the first post.

The place is alright but it's a bit pricy for what you get. They give you very little meat and very little cheese. And you have to tell them not to put ketchup in your sandwich.

Definitely not worth is for the like 200$ you'd need to get a set, but they do actually prepare the steaks the same way they do in Philly. At least, they use thin sliced layers of beef minced up while it fries on the flat iron grill, followed by melted cheese (wiz or not, quality of cheeses vary pretty hard). The staff doesn't quite grasp the idea of how the sauces work - that you add them if you want them, not subtract them if you don't.

The portions are shamefully small considering the price, and you'll get about two good bites out of their steak before you hit the empty bun. If you're desperate for anything resembling a steak, this place might do it, but seriously, you can do way better in that neighborhood.

The service at this place kinda sucks. The staff never smiles and seem like the typical clock-punching staff you get at most Taiwanese restaurants, I wouldn't mind so much, but its pretty expensive. Also the french fries here are terrible, worst french fries I've had in Taiwan, and that's saying something.

I hate to say i told you so, but i could've guessed it. I'm going to open up an authentic American restaurant soon and serve nothing but hot pockets. There will be the usual assorted variety you would normally find in grocery freezers across America. I'm thinking 250 a pop. A bit pricey, but at least you know you'll get the same quality each time you come. You'll have to ask for ketchup though, and will only get one little packet at that. If you ask for more you will be looked at with surprise and irritation and will get handed a second packet

You can serve them with gravy and call it a poutine.
