After the success of Malinda Schultz’s Wufong Project that raised the funds to build a community center in ChingChuan (in Hsinchu) that supports the indigenous community especially the kids there, we are looking to kick off programs for the local youth. The center will not be ready until 2013 but there is no reason why the children should have to wait – nor should you have to wait till 2013 to be able to get involved now!

WHAT WE NEED: We are looking for a rotation of passionate volunteers that can come up for a Saturday early afternoon course related to more arts and crafts workshops for the kids. This can be a long term (once a month or over a weekend) or a one-time volunteer opportunity although I’m sure after the first time you head out there, you’ll be joining us again.

Some ideas:

Just in Taiwan for a few months and haven’t been able to get out of Taipei? This is the ideal opportunity to get out to Hsinchu and up in the mountains for some greenery. After the workshop there’s plenty of trails to walk around and spend the night in a hostel up in the mountains. If weather permits so that you don’t boil to pinkness, hot springs are abound too in this gorgeous setting!

TASK: Share your knowledge, whether it be arts, baking, cooking, magic, or offering basic music workshops! There are dozens of kids in all ages and we can sort out additional volunteers to assist you and make this a fantastic project for all. We’ve had people volunteer before and they’ve walked away with an amazing experience to have been able to show the youth their skills!

As far as I am aware, you still need a permit to volunteer in Taiwan.

Can you provide the required permits?

I think I may be interested.. how would one get there by public transport from Taipei? Bus to Zhudong and then another bus up the mountain? How long does the bus from Zhudong to Ching Chuan take?

Also, would I be able to coach them some soccer? I'm sure they'd love it!

Hi Big Duke - please read through my blog site on this particular subject.

There are other ways to help if you will not teach - we also need some volunteers to hang out and be teachers aides or even to head up to Wufong Hsinchu for some natural hiking activities - you can also spend the night and enjoy nature which should not be an issue for visas. Again you can check out my site on some possible alternatives on how to help in a way that should not require any visas (other than a tourist one) :)

Teggs, thanks! people typically take the HSR to Hsinchu (not sure where you are based) and then either split a cab or bus up. It takes approximately 1 hour by bus I believe.

Just be careful. Even volunteering in any way is not allowed without a permit. Seriously, I am not trying to be difficult, but this is the case in Taiwan. You definitely cannot do any volunteer work on a tourist visa.

Hi Big Duke, yes everyone should be aware of this.
But there are things you can still do to make a difference - for example showing up at an event and supporting the cause without volunteering at the booth. Or while we are doing the workshop you are welcome as a tourist to go hiking in the mountains and be a spectator on what's going on. Also if you are moving out of Taiwan and have items to donate, recycling your things in a clothing drive also helps :)

Hi hinamoo,

I just came back from California and I'm interested in this volunteer opportunity. I can teach the kids English and music, but I was wondering if there is an age requirement, since I'm only 14 right now. I would really like to help these kids and also to get away from the cities once in a while. :)

Hi livelovelaugh830, sorry about late response - turned on the "notification" option now.

What type of music can you teach? Feel free to PM me as well and we can discuss further and I can better understand your situation. Right now we have a guitar teacher heading up approx 1-2 times a month and it should be great.

I'm a classical singer (opera/lieder) and I'm willing to do a recital for the kids. Although, finding an accompanist might prove difficult. I'll be in Taiwan in Sept and October, if any pianist like to team up with me for this, please PM me here.
