so I ended up goin to the Government gym which is 50nt/hour and no contract :)

50NT sounds good to me.
Where's this govt gym I keep hearing about?

I don't understand why these gyms want contracts and commitments. It's not like they give you a free phone upfront like the cellco's do.

Even if I signed a contract, can they come after me when I leave the country?

The YMCA here in Bellevue, WA, with a great pool, saunas, complete fitness classes of every imaginable kind, rooms and rooms of exercise equipment of all kinds, nice locker rooms, four free personal-trainer sessions per new member, free family meals once a week... costs $50/month for a FAMILY of two parents plus as many kids as they have. There's a one-time fee to join the Y of $75/family, no exceptions or anything "funny". Also, you can use any of the 15 other YMCAs in King County for free after you join the one in Bellevue. :2cents:

$70 a month for one person to use any gym is insane... that's WAY too much money. That's more money than I spent on lunches in a month in Taipei! Maybe not in the grand scheme of things, if you make $5000 a month or something, but if a gym in Taipei is a lot more expensive than a bigger gym here in the US, I'd say something's not quite right because it would be the first thing I'd found that costs a lot MORE in Taipei that wasn't imported from somewhere far away.

Yes, a car payment might be $200/month, but after a year, you have something that you could sell for 50-75% of the start price. All you have from the gym is MAYBE a little bit more fitness or weight lost. You can't sell it. That's a really silly comparison, IMO... do you work for the gym in question, TaipeiD?

Thanks for the info. I used to pay $40/mo in NYC for single person, multiple location pass. Nice gym with multiple locations throughout the city and nation-wide. I didn't use it much, only went there for treadmills. I got it for cheap only because I ebay'd it from a member. To be fair, I don't think YMCA is really comparable to fitness clubs.

To answer your last question, no I don't work for them.

A couple of things to keep in mind.

First of all is community. When you're working out by yourself in a public, practically free place then you're often surrounded by people who are only willing to do the least possible to get fit. It's not exactly a community dedicated to excellence and they can't/won't push you to the next level.

Second, comparing prices is only relevant if the product is exactly equal. For example, my "classes" are really semi-private/small group personal training. They are NOTHING like the fitness classes run in large gyms. I've seen those classes dozens of times and there's no progression, zero movement correction, no goal setting, etc. My sessions have all that. Getting semi-private personal training sessions at the price I charge is a steal. Yet people often compare the price thinking it's just like a normal aerobics class. It's apples vs. oranges.

FWIW I'd choose anything over the local sports centers and university gyms. If fitness is important to you, then make it a priority!

Your rates are alrite. I might consider it next time I visit here.

I like to explore things myself tho. I usually go with a buddy. Of course none of these places have people there to correct you when you are doing something wrong that may seriously injure youself. Even if there are, they don't bother to inform you either. But its something you need to keep an eye on yourself in the first place. If I feel something's not right, I stop the routine. Youtube and google are quite helpful, too.

Youtube and Google are filled with clips of God-knows-who doing God-knows-what. I end up seeing lots of people that get hurt learning stuff off of video clips from self-taught "Joe90210" or whoever off those sites.

Besides that, random movements aren't part of a planned progression or a program.

Try us out if you get a chance. All are welcome.
