Revel amid ruins

The long search for dancefloor Utopia is over

An urban hideaway beckons

(Words by Keith Brown)

In 1995, on a tiny patch of dry ground amid squatter garden plots, wetlands and a Taipei County landfill, DJ @LLEN and cohort Butterfly staged a very DIY and very unforgettable first-ever outdoor party (rave, if you like). Those of us electronic dance music lovers who were eager for a respite from the tired formula served up by Taipei clubs reached sonic nirvana for a few bliss-filled hours that July night. The event delivered on the sentiments of its “Finally…The Party” title.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Seventeen years on, Taipei clubland is still delivering stale formula passing as dance music (for the most part). As much as clubs have been impervious to change, so has DJ @LLEN. Good thing, as that means he’s still brimming with DIY spirit and ready to air things out a bit, this time amid factory ruins, on Saturday night this week (July 14, 2012).

The event goes by “Lost Paradise Project v 1.0: Jailbreaking Taipei Clubland,” and kicks off at 16:00 (doors open at 15:00) and continues on till the wee hours of the next day. Nangang Bottle Cap Factory (now derelict) is the venue, and it’s within a five-minute walk of Nangang MRT Station. Damage is only NT$450, true value for the price as 13 of Taipei’s most forward-thinking DJs, with their ears firmly to the underground, will be dropping techno, house, electro, drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep and UK bass.

On a personal level, it’s refreshing to see a DJ I’ve enjoyed listening to since 1991 (21 years already) still pushing boundaries in terms of his own musical selection and in the talent he hand picks for events such as this one. And no party you’ll attend in Taipei this year will get any more underground than this. Parties like this depend on your feet helping to fill the dance floor! Your support is massively appreciated!
