Where the hell is Cold Front? This is about gay marriage and he hasn't posted anything or shown any of his painstaking research skills.

Sorry, Little Buddha, but in defending your position and turning a discussion about marriage and adoption into something else, you seem to be trying to get me to say something like, "If only straight people could put their energies more toward economic revivification that they do in yelling at each other at the top of their lungs in their homes and slapping their children around," just to drag this thing into the gutter.
I won't do that.

NOW... as for the marriage thing. The announcement of gay marriage comes at a time when Chen is capitalizing on his human rights record in the US. Hopefully, the momentum can keep going and passage actually happens in December. The KMT opposes anything that can give the DPP bragging rights, so it will be a tough battle unless enough pan-blue legislators have enough close friends who are gay and want the right to marry.
Compassion can sway their votes if they are not ultra-traditionalists.
Does anyone agree with that assessment?

I think it'll turn out something like that too. We'll just have to wait and see I suppose ... :?

As for the Creative Braintrust discussion, the consensus seems to be to take up gay issues as a single thread on Living in Taiwan and when the discussions become large enough, a separate forum like La Vida Loca en Taiwan would be justified.

Has anyone heard any more about the possibility of having same-sex marriage here in Taiwan? I've read the brief articles in the paper, but don't know who close it is to happening.
My bf says he thinks it is only a political ploy because of the upcoming elections. As long as it passes, I don't care about the real reason behind proposing it. However, he's not sure it will pass -- i.e., voting will be held off until after the election, at which time it will be dropped.
Anybody heard different? Have any ideas or opinions?
P.S. When are they going to start the gay/lesbian forum? Huh?

It's still a draft law... due for discussion in the legislature in December. I doubt we'll here much more until then. I'm not particularly optimistic.

Speaking of draft laws...
Here is an excerpt from a recent article by Andrew Sullivan:
Andrew Sullivan wrote:There's a strange lull in gay America right now. Strange because it presages one of the most wrenching political struggles gay Americans have ever fought. While we revel in greater cultural acceptance, in a realignment of attitudes among the younger generations, as we see openly gay men and women reach unprecedented levels of visibility and respect, fifty one words should give us pause. What are these fifty-one words? Here they are. Read each one. They could change the direction of gay rights in this country for ever:
Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.
These are the words of something called the Federal Marriage Amendment.
The entire short article can be read here:
