Male US and ROC passport with ID number but no ID card - should I renew my card?

Postby ech207 » 18 Jan 2012, 15:21

Dear All:

I apologize if these questions have been asked and answered elsewhere, based on my reading they have not.

I was born before 1984 in Taipei but went to the US before I was five. As a result, my household registration has long since expired but I still have an ID number. I recently decided to renew my Taiwanese passport and as expected it has my old Taiwan ID number on it as well as 持照人出國應經核准 stamped on page 50 and the 橋居 stamp. I do not live in Taiwan but travel there extensively (9-10 times per year never for more than a few days each stay) using my US passport only to enter and exit.

I would appreciate any insight on the following:

1) Will renewing my ROC ID increase the government's ability to draft me?
2) when using my ROC passport to travel, will immigration officers at other countries ask to see my ROC ID? Or will the ID number in the passport be sufficient?
3) does anyone know if it is possible to get a 台胞正 without showing the ID card and only the passport?
4) if I were to enter Taiwan using my TW passport and were to go through the procedure of getting an exit permit, would I encounter any problems given my past history of using my US passport to enter Taiwan?

BTW: I have travelled to Taiwan extensively since 2006 using two different US passports and have never experienced any problems.

Many thanks for your help!

1. No. You get an ID assigned at birth and it never expires... well, it does when you do.
2. Passport is sufficient.
3. I'm guessing yes. The travel agency takes care of that for my wife and I can't recall her ever giving up her ID.
4. No. The only problems you may run into is if you stay past 4 months... even coming in on your US passport.

lol two different US passports what a load of shit. when you renew a passport they either take your old one or cut the front page.

I'm guessing he meant that he had 1 passport which he used and when that expired, he used the new passport, thus the 2 different US passports.

if thats the case, seems legit.

to answer OP:
1. once you get an ID card and hukou, your ass is subject to draft and they probably wont let you leave taiwan unless youre in an overseas university. my buddy whos in UT now only has a 2 year passport to make sure he's coming back.
2. No they won't, immigration officials just look at your passport (dunno why youd use taiwanese passport overseas when you got us =/ )
3. you need an ID card to get a tai bao zhen
4. nope you should be fine, i used my aussie passport before i got my taiwanese one. just go to TECO in US to get your passport theyd give you a 3 month multiple entry permit valid for 3 years, but you wont get an ID card (you can get one later on) which means you have 0 work and residency rights here.
