I'm an Australian citizen and I've lived in Australia most of my life. My mother is a Taiwanese citizen, with a passport and ID number; I have a Taiwanese passport as well but with no idea number. I understand that through my mother I can obtain Taiwanese household registration if I apply before I turn twenty, (I was born in early 1995), and that if I am successful I will be required to take military service although because of my birth year it will be of reduced length and intensity.
Have I got this right, and am I missing anything else important? And quickly on the topic of military service, I'm not sure what really to expect, I've heard mixed things about it and although I do speak fluent Mandarin and bits and pieces of Taiwanese, I am not sure if it will be particularly difficult because of my ethnicity, am I right to be worried?
