How much is the citizenship worth? I am a dual citizen, and I am planning a trip to Taiwan this summer. I have contacted TECO and they have confirmed that I am still a Taiwanese national, and that the safest way to visit Taiwan without worrying about the military conscription would be to renew my ROC passport and obtain some kind of overseas residence status. It seems like a hassle, and I am thinking it might be easier and faster to renounce my citizenship? Even though male citizens of conscription age can't renounce the citizenship, I think I might be able to after all.
What would you recommend? It is really important to me that everything is solved before the summer, so that I can visit Taiwan and not worry about the military. Either because I have obtained the overseas residence status, or because I have successfully renounced the citizenship. Because I have sent copies of both my old ROC and current foreign passport to the ministry of internal affairs I am thinking they can link the passport information to my ROC ID and give me trouble if I enter on my foreign passport, which makes me worry even more.
Edit: I decided to apply to renew my ROC passport, I qualify for the overseas residence status so this should keep me safe from conscription. However, it seems like I need to apply for an exit permit in order to leave. This should be granted though(?). Now I wonder if I could or should apply for an ROC ID card? If I enter using the ROC passport I should qualify for the ID card, because I use to have household registration in Taiwan. Would an application for the ID card somehow cancel out my overseas status or something like that?
Thank you in advance. I probably worry to much, but being held back and denied to leave the country would be horrible.
