iOS 6

Postby Adam_CLO » 15 Jun 2012, 15:29

Has anybody installed iOS 6 yet? (it's a developer preview at the moment)

Unfortunately the Chinese Siri only handles weather at the moment, but I'm sure it'll get better.

Apple's new maps uses non standard Pinyin, similar to Bing maps. Hope they get that fixed. I think streetview is gone too, which is a shame.

The improved Chinese/English/Pinyin support looks interesting.

From Apple.com: With improved text input and built-in support for popular Chinese Internet services, iOS 6 makes iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch even better for Chinese-speaking users. With a new Chinese dictionary and improved text input, typing in Chinese is easier, faster, and more accurate. You can mix full and abbreviated Pinyin and even type English words in a Pinyin sentence without switching keyboards. With support for over 30,000 characters, iOS 6 more than doubles the number of Chinese characters supported in handwriting recognition. And when you add words to your personal dictionary, iCloud makes them available on all your devices. Baidu is a built-in option in Safari, and you can share videos directly to Youku and Tudou. You can also post to Sina Weibo from Camera, Photos, Maps, Safari, and Game Center.

Facetime over cellular… I used 3g unrestrictor since I don’t even remember how long ago
Passbook…. Pocket wallet was available before first iphone was introduced, so by integrated passbook to kill all developers of similar apps?
Siri can understand sports…. Mine can even understand slang after added some extensions on Spire…

Apple is too lazy… every new IOS reveal is actually just integrated some APPs from app store and Cydia… innovation? Said what? :ponder:

Is there any word yet about how the new Apple (rather than Google) maps are going to work in Taiwan? - how much detail there will be, how good or bad the pinyin will be, and so on. I gather Apple is getting much of the data from TomTom: I don't know what their mapping is like for Taiwan, or if they even have any. Apple's getting restaurant data from Yelp, which doesn't bode well for Taiwan, given that Yelp has zero presence here.

This Gizmodo story...

... doesn't look too promising, but that was a couple of months ago. Let's hope things will improve by the time it's released.

I've avoided upgrading until Google developed a new maps app (which they have done called Google Maps) and until I'm comfortable with it.

I like the new Google Maps app and and now upgrading to iOS 6.

Have IOS 6 on one of my iPads - runs OK but less stable than 5.1.1 IMHO . Siri is a nice add-on
Waiting for the dream team to release the JB in a few weeks for my iPhone. Not worth the upgrade.

With below expected sales figures of the iPhone 5, I'd bet on a conspiracy theory IOS 6 soon to be 6.1 and JB eligible.
