computer tutor

I am looking for a computer tutor, preferably female, definitly ENGLISH SPEAKING. Neither my husband or I have had any formal classes and I would like to expand my skills. It may be only once a month. I want to learn how to use blue tooth to download photos from my camera to my laptop. Also I am using Windows Live Movie Maker but find the very clear directions I find online still don't work.

I'm not volunteering for the job - I live in Taidong (and I assume you don't), plus I don't do Windows (Linux geek only).

But I'm responding to your post with a couple of suggestions:

1) Stick an add up on a bulletin board (or online forum) in a university setting, preferably written in Chinese. Lots of college students speak decent English and could use the part-time work.

2) In your ad, let the perspective teacher know just where you want to meet. Your post didn't even say what city you live in. If it's Taipei (just guessing that's the case), what part of town? Your tutor probably won't want to spend a lot of time traveling.

3) Considering that you're not offering much in terms of hours (once per month?), then maybe you ought to combine this computer tutoring with some Chinese lessons. That is, of course, if you're not already enrolled in some sort of Chinese language class.

Also just noting that it might be harder to find a female tutor. Geeks tend to be guys, but that's not 100%. For awhile I lived in Taipei and joined a computer club - I recall we had one girl and about 30 guys.

good luck,
DB

Thanks DB for your suggestions. I live in Taipei, Zhongshan District. I do not need Chinese lessons because I have been in Taipei 20 years. If the tutor came to my home I would rather have a woman, but thinking about it I guess if we met at Starbucks it wouldn't matter.

Maybe I could post a message at the computer club? I will do a search. Thanks again! SRS

SRS, are you sure you need a tutor? Maybe it's enough if you describe the problem here in more detail, and other people (myself included) will then help you solve it. What's the camera model? What is it exactly that you're trying to do with Windows Movie Maker (I remember there are two versions of this program, and the later one actually has some functionality removed; maybe it's just impossible to do it in the first place?).

I have a Nokia 2680 slide. I stopped in at a Nokia store and they showed me how to do it in the store and I wrote down the steps but when I tried it at home it didn't work.
RE: Windows Live Movie Maker I am now trying to use the following functions: fit to music; set start and end time; duration. Nothing works. Are you saying that getting an update gave me LESS functions??? Can I go back to the earlier version?

I have questions about the computer every month. Everyone always says "It's easy to do that". But they never tell you there are 5 steps you didn't do that lead to failure! If you can help with the above problems I would be very grateful. SRS

I know nothing about this phone, but generally there are three steps you need to take in order to use Bluetooth. I'll explain in a moment, but before that, have you installed the Nokia PC suite? If not download it from here and install:
http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/glo ... te_ALL.exe

Seems this software might be necessary to download photos, and chances are it will set up everything automatically. If it doesn't, here are the three steps:

I. Turn on Bluetooth on your computer.
II. Turn on Bluetooth in the phone.
III. Pair up the phone with you computer.

Step I - on the computer (I'm assuming you're using Windows 7):
1. Click "Start" and then click "Control Panel."
2. Type "bluetooth" in the search box (upper right corner) in the Control Panel window.
3. Click "Change Bluetooth Settings" that appears.
4. Make sure the following are selected:
a) "Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer,"
b) "Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer,"
c) "Alert me when a new Bluetooth device wants to connect."
Click "OK."

Step II - on the phone:
1. Choose "Menu" > "Settings" > "Connectivity" > "Bluetooth."
2. Choose "Bluetooth" > "On."

Step III - also on the phone, and in the same menu as above:
1. Choose "Paired devices" > "Add new device."
2. Choose the name of your computer, and select "Add."
3. Type the same password in the phone and on the computer.

Nokia 2680 Slide manual explains how to do steps II and III on page 19:
http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/guid ... _UG_en.pdf

Alternatively, step III can also be done from the computer, and this video from Microsoft shows how to do it:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... rk-devices

The phone manual doesn't explain how to transfer photos once you complete the above steps. Generally you should be able to just open a photo in your phone, go to some "Options" menu, and choose "Send via Bluetooth." This is how it worked in my Sony Ericsson sometime ago. For this phone though, it seems it might be necessary to use the Nokia PC Suite. The PC suite manual says on page 23 that you should open the PC Suite, click on "Store images," and then "Store now."

Maybe someone else also has this (or similar) Nokia phone, and can shed some more light? Sorry I can't be more helpful, but my last Nokia was a 3310 ten years ago.

There is "Windows Movie Maker," and "Windows Live Movie Maker." The second one is the newer version, but in popular opinion it's worse than the predecessor, because Microsoft has removed many features "users don't need." Most Movie Maker users prefer the old version.

The old WMM version 2.6 can still be downloaded from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=34

Unfortunately, Microsoft has already decided what's best for you, and will not let you to install this version unless you're upgrading. Therefore, you also need to put some old Movie Maker files on your computer to make the installer believe it's doing an upgrade. It's easily doable though, and adds about 5 mins to the installation time.

Version 2.6 is basically like version 2.1 with one feature (video capture) removed, so if you have 2.1 there would be no reason to upgrade.

Which version do you have?
