buying used AC, what to watch for?

Postby Taiwan Luthiers » 19 Jul 2012, 14:01

I bought a used window AC a few months ago, and now it suddenly died. AC repair guy came over and told me the compressor broke (basically the coils have shorted to the case) so the AC is pretty much gone. Now I need a new AC and a new one is expensive, so I was wondering what do I watch out for when buying used AC unit, or do I avoid used AC altogether?

No AC is not optional, especially with all the humidity sensitive stuff in my shop.

If you have a reliable AC guy you can trust, getting a used machine from him can be a good deal. Otherwise its pretty dicey I think.

I'd go for the new one as the price is comopensated by the fact that it will be more energy efficient, the bills hence will be lower and/or you could use it not only for a longer time -in terms of years- but a longer persiod during the day. Moreover, there is a 2 thousand nt "kickback" from the Government/Taipower when you buy a newer one, so you will be saving 2K already from the start.

Do not go to the big yellow store. Even a smaller, neighborhood store would be better, in terms of service.

If any new arrival needs assistance in Taipei, I can provide it in exchange for Star Trek or Supernatural (the TV series) stuff or other sci-fi materials. Let me know what help you need by PM, along with what you have to offer in return. And yes, I am serious.
