To be honest, I did read the legislation provided on a government website relating to labor legislation and rules for foreigners working in Taiwan.

I found it on a link in Forumosa but I'd have to go dig for it again. The law states that you need a teachers license for public schools (not buxibans or language schools) and the school should go through the regular process of applying for you as either a primary or secondary employer. Not sure about private schools though.

I know some public schools try hire teachers as "consultants" or through buxibans or language schools but that is the grey area where I got screwed in so I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks! A lot of valuable lessons well learnt.. The labor department can definitely help if you have the right people on your side.
The buxiban fines were low but the high schools were much steeper. A lot of resentment caused here, but we've all moved on.

Thanks for your very useful post which should have been made a sticky. As you said your employer and the schools knowingly acted illegally and that is why they got fined. I am sure they thought they would get away with it. Too bad if they resent it.
