What is the penalty for drunk driving and kill someone?

I now have watched so many videos of drunk driving in Taiwan ever since I joined this board. What is the average penalty for drunk driving and kill someone? Do they normally pay money to the victim's family without going to jail?

Sorry, that last post was incredibly cynical, especially for a Saturday afternoon.

You'd almost certainly face jail time and a loss of licence. This still does depend on who you are, though, and your connections, and in saying that I am not being cynical.

Yes, you will pay a lot of money to the family, and depending on the amount/severity of judge, jail time will be long/short/commuted to more money. And yes, several foreigners have had this experience.

You can likely avoid jail time by paying the family a significant sum of money (like 3M NT), but I think the window is closing on this style of 'out'. Taiwanese attitudes towards drunk driving has changed so much in the last five years, that it won't be long before they treat this issue the same way it is treated int he West (cynicism of some of the posts in this thread aside)

The law-makers are fixing the law due to the recent drunk-driving/killing instances. Has Taiwan reached the tipping point on this issue? I hope so.
