Shi-Da night market closing

Forum rules
We hope that the Living in Taiwan forum will be of value to you and others. To ensure this, please note:

It is best to capitalize topics and to avoid vague titles. “Hi, I’m new” and “Help please” are examples of bad titles.

Before posting, please check the FAQ thread, and – more importantly – use the search function to ensure that your topic has not been discussed before and that there is not an existing thread you could update with your contribution.

While Living in Taiwan is a busy, wide-ranging forum, there are other specific forums for relationships, teaching, business, legal issues, animals, food, events, travel, restaurants, and so on. Check the Forumosa menu to find the most appropriate place for your post.

While it is preferable to post questions dealing with dissimilar topics in separate threads (“How Much for an Apartment in Tianmu?”, “Are There Many Foreigners in Tianmu?”), if you are a new arrival, it is possible to present numerous questions in one post, but realize that your thread will then, after two weeks, be merged into the New to Taiwan: Some Questions thread.

I dunno. The only person I know with business there is Rainbow. She's already set up elsewhere. It didn't come as a surprise to her, and she won't lose much business. In fact, she'll probably do quite well.
The rest of the people I know in that area don't have businesses there, and they are kicking up their heels in joy.

You mean the residents? Yeah, probably.

So where is rainbow setting up?

What happened to that guy from Out of India? He was very vocal with news outlets. But then, as you guys say, the Taipei government sponsored International Food Street was the first to go, so he's fighting a lost battle.

In fact, this goose is cooked, from teh day they removed all MRT and bus stop signs with the Shi-Da Night Market moniker. We can cry all we want, and all the restaurants I favor, Rainbow's among them, will have my patronage no matter where they are. I am just sorry to see my favs go. No, not Jamaica, noooo!

If any new arrival needs assistance in Taipei, I can provide it in exchange for Star Trek or Supernatural (the TV series) stuff or other sci-fi materials. Let me know what help you need by PM, along with what you have to offer in return. And yes, I am serious.

Shi-Da night market closing

Postby headhonchoII » 25 Jul 2012, 14:40

Yep it's really torn a bit of a hole in the city, especially for ex NTU students. Closing down illegal places is justified, but legally permitted businesses? Surely they could have clubbed together and put some harassment lawsuit back at them.

I mean the whole city operates like this, but Da'an residents and developers see more money to be made. They did have a point with it's over expansion but not with the whole area. Interesting that for years Shi-Da road didn't even have a decent footpath. I guessed money and gentrification was behind this when I saw some fancy new developments going up on there over the last few years.

Noticing this thread is a bit more lively today I'm guessing you lot may have seen these recent articles in Taipei Times. If not, here they are;

EDITORIAL: Development fever takes over Shi-Da
Dodgy dealings
Travel writers warn Taipei City: Destroying Shi-Da is a “stupid move”

Edit: oops, I see Incubus did post that last article.

I totally agree on this one. Smaller and smaller, and with a bathroom last cleaned in the latter Tang dynasty -- but it's home. Last year I was chatting with the boss who told me he didn't know how long he could keep going anyway (this was before all the night market closing stuff got started, but not long before). He was practically the only sort-of-traditional student dive teashop left in the area at that point. Every year I dread that it won't be there when I go back.

In fact, I almost think I won't return to Taipei anymore -- head South and stay there if I get to Taiwan again. And for someone has always identified strongly as a Taipei person, that's a big change. But I don't want to see the personal, living parts of my city on life support or worse. I'm glad I somehow decided to just get a room in the night market area last year and hang out there for a month. Gut Shi-Da and then set your gunsights on Gongguan, and there's not much left for real people without expat packages except cheap Hello Kitty and 7-11s.

I loved that place too. Used to drink there a lot. However, Co2 and the other Bastille are in Gongguan, a 10 min walk away.
