Ladies who seems to wear a lot of clothing despite the heat

Forum rules
We hope that the Living in Taiwan forum will be of value to you and others. To ensure this, please note:

It is best to capitalize topics and to avoid vague titles. “Hi, I’m new” and “Help please” are examples of bad titles.

Before posting, please check the FAQ thread, and – more importantly – use the search function to ensure that your topic has not been discussed before and that there is not an existing thread you could update with your contribution.

While Living in Taiwan is a busy, wide-ranging forum, there are other specific forums for relationships, teaching, business, legal issues, animals, food, events, travel, restaurants, and so on. Check the Forumosa menu to find the most appropriate place for your post.

While it is preferable to post questions dealing with dissimilar topics in separate threads (“How Much for an Apartment in Tianmu?”, “Are There Many Foreigners in Tianmu?”), if you are a new arrival, it is possible to present numerous questions in one post, but realize that your thread will then, after two weeks, be merged into the New to Taiwan: Some Questions thread.

Ladies who seems to wear a lot of clothing despite the heat

Postby Taiwan Luthiers » 05 May 2012, 09:47

In the summer I see ladies, who are often standing in traffic selling those white flowers, covered head to toe in thick clothings even though its over 35 degrees outside and very hot and sweaty. Is there a reason why these ladies are so well covered? Some say its to prevent from getting a tan, is that true? How do they avoid getting a heatstroke?
Cat-gut strings are made from kitten guts, stretched out to near breaking point and then hardened with grue saliva. As a result these give a feeling of Pain and anguish whenever played, and often end up playing themselves backwards as part of satanic rituals.

I'm guessing they're more afraid of melanoma than heatstroke.

You don't see the Bedouin crossing deserts in bikinis, do you?
You can live here and have a great life and not be the least bit into living the local life. This is one aspect of Taiwan that pisses me off to no end:
Certain ladies who will never even accomplish a single blade's worth of grass of manual labour, will expend untold amounts of time, energy, and cost to protect themselves from the deadly effects of either rain or sun which might happen to befall upon their vacant skulls in the 1.6 seconds that it takes them to traverse their fatuous bodies from a convenience store to their haphazardly parked & overheated SUV.

even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee:"

It's to avoid getting tanned. Many Asian women will go to great lengths to avoid even the slightest change of skin color from the sun, and will spend money on skin bleaching lotions and potions to make sure they look as ghostly as possible. To them, that's beautiful.

When my friend's TW wife was with us one weekend in Kending and came home with a SLIGHT suntan on her face (despite hiding herself from the sun the best she could), she was picked on and harassed incessantly by her coworkers and family members until the 'tan' wore off. She was mortified.

yeah they want to look Japanese and not Indonesian or Philippina.

That said the sun is a killer on skin . MY then gf was only 22. And she had somewhat of a wrinkle around her eyes when she smiled (at 22). She loved sun and tans.

I had a coworker who loved getting seriously tan. Dead of skin cancer at 36.
It's amazing what getting out of the care of the Scottish National Health Service can do for your life expectancy.

I saw on the news of a woman in the US who loved tans so much that she looks more black than most blacks I have ever met, and she's white.

You're not going to get melanoma from normal daily outings. Evading the sun will do more damage than normal daily exposure will because your vitamin d levels will be too low. There is evidence that proper exposure to sunlight will reduce the risk of a large variety of cancers and also reduce the death rate of others, including melanoma. Melanoma is more likely caused by sunburns. So the more sunburns you've gotten, the more risk. So...spend some time in the sun everyday with more than your arms and legs exposed, maybe 30 minutes around noon (the time of day matters) if you're white, less if you're really pale, more if you're dark.

Just putting something into the Trash or the Recycle Bin doesn't actually delete it. You then have to *empty* the Trash or Recycle Bin. (Once a year, I hear about somebody whose hard drive is full, despite having practically no files. It's because over the years, they've put 79 gigabytes' worth of stuff in the Recycle Bin and never emptied it.)
