Guys.... don't turn your nose up those packets the fruit vendors give us - Red packet usually contains plum powder, the yellow/green packet usually contains an herb called "Gan Tsow".

In most working class families, you'll find the tomatoes and guava will be served on the family tea table with a little dish of the powder for you to dip in. That's the way it is enjoyed here.

You don't have to like it, but you should at least try it.

I try everything at least once.
Balsamic vinegar, at least every 6 hours.

I'm waiting for those "shu mei" berry things to come out again (unless I missed them lol). Wonderful with some simple syrup

its all compensation for growing them pumped with water and of bad flavor quality. big ol watery strawberries taste bad I think, so im guessing why thats so popular (not just taiwan). for me, fruit grown well and selected more for flavor rather than shipping hardiness doesn't need anything extra, they are often too sweet on their own.

although Taiwanese are addicted to super strong flavors, they sauce up everything it seems, so maybe thats why they do it to even normally sweet fruit like some mango varieties.

My Mum eats pineapples, oranges and apples with salt. I never quite got that.


The salt stops the pineapple eating holes in your mouth. Yes, really.
Once again Taiwanese do know a lot about fruit and vegetables, how to grow them, how to prepare them and especially how to eat them :).

Not all, think strawberries and cream English style. It's just to balance the tartness or acidity and give them a bit of variation.

Here's a Taiwanese raw dish that will knock your socks off: raw tomatoes, with a dipping sauce comprised of shredded ginger and soy sauce

You can probably get it at places that sell chua bing (shaved ice usually with fresh fruit toppings) and mango milk type drinks using fresh mangos, if my recollection serves me correctly.

When I was younger, i liked a little brown sugar on slced tomatoes. :lick:

Those packets of suan1 mei2 powder are quite yummy, but tw has the best fruit anyway so i never felt a need for any powders or sugars.

I find strange in the us they gve caramel syrup with the apple slices in fast food happy meals. Isnt the whole point of fruit over fries so kds can have a healthier alternative?

Fruit dipped in chocolate? Dislike it too. You have two main stars vying for sweetness.

Just fruit, pure and simple. Taiwan sure has the most awesome fruit! :discodance:
