We hope that the Living in Taiwan forum will be of value to you and others. To ensure this, please note:

It is best to capitalize topics and to avoid vague titles. “Hi, I’m new” and “Help please” are examples of bad titles.

Before posting, please check the FAQ thread, and – more importantly – use the search function to ensure that your topic has not been discussed before and that there is not an existing thread you could update with your contribution.

While Living in Taiwan is a busy, wide-ranging forum, there are other specific forums for relationships, teaching, business, legal issues, animals, food, events, travel, restaurants, and so on. Check the Forumosa menu to find the most appropriate place for your post.

While it is preferable to post questions dealing with dissimilar topics in separate threads (“How Much for an Apartment in Tianmu?”, “Are There Many Foreigners in Tianmu?”), if you are a new arrival, it is possible to present numerous questions in one post, but realize that your thread will then, after two weeks, be merged into the New to Taiwan: Some Questions thread.

The Best Care-Package EVER

Postby jc.rocketfingers » 15 Jun 2012, 00:11

Hi guys, here's the story:

I'm looking to send the best care package ever to my friends living in southern Taiwan (three of them are living together). They keep telling me it's hard for them to find things certain things (for instance, deodorant, cheese, and condoms... which makes me wonder just what they're getting into) so I'm going to put together an amazing package to help them celebrate their first year outside the States. I was hoping you good folks would be able to offer additional suggestions for hard to find (or just overpriced) items that you wish somebody would send you from back home. Some ideas I had were snacks, medical stuff (like asprin, etc), or little flags or stickers. Just a thought. Anyway, any and all input is appreciated!

Fleshlight.
It's amazing what getting out of the care of the Scottish National Health Service can do for your life expectancy.

Fleshlights are probably made in Taiwan

Send them the following:
One good Frisbee
One large bottle multivitamins
Two packs baseball cards
Two packs cinnamon gum
One large pack licorice
One large pack multiweirdflavored jellybeans

Many of the "hard to find" products you mentioned are available at stores like Coscto, Carrefour and Watsons. Most major brands of multi-vitamins are available at Coscto. Those things are heavy and the postage will be ridiculous.

Things that are hard to find... Natural health products like Toms of Maine Deodorants are difficult or impossible to find.
Shoes.... Size 11 is the top size you can find down south, and there are not many choices available!

Cheeses!? I honestly don't think you can send meats or cheeses to Taiwan. Please correct me if I"m wrong. Your friends can find a halfway decent selection of cheese at Costco.

Plus sized includes simple ole "Large" in the states, not even xl or anything.

Some things I have asked for in the past: Pop Tarts, Twinkies, Oatmeal Creme Pies (I'm not overweight, FYI), shoes (I wear a size 13), deodorant (Old Spice, Right Guard), Crest toothpaste, clothes (I usually can't find the right size or styles that I like here), you can get brands like Levi's, Dickies, etc. here but they are usually twice as much. Stuff like that... but the longer I live here the better I get at finding stuff I used to think were unavailable here.

Flaming Hot Cheetos
Advil
NyQuil
Coldeese (sp?)
Hanes Boxer Briefs
Beach Towel
Access to your sling box

That's all I can come up with. Would you like to be my friend? If yes, then add ukulele strings to the list.
