However, this also works both ways. There often seems to be a real aversion by Taiwanese men to Taiwanese women who are in their early thirties. Sure, everyone likes a younger woman, but in my opinion, most Taiwanese women in their early thirties are still absolutely gorgeous. Furthermore, they've developed enough non-physical charms by then to make them really great prospects for marriage. Taiwanese women in their early to mid thirties are massively underrated in this country; in fact, it's tragic that so many truly great women are considered "washed up" or "over the hill". If I were a pretty steady kind of Taiwanese guy, I'd be working on hitting my stride (career, financial security, interests/hobbies, general conversationalist, etc.) in my early thirties and then taking advantage of my prospects with this massive pool of excellent women my own age that so many other people overlook.

That is so bloody true. Just yesterday I was teaching a beginner level adult class and we're still on unit one with the "hello", Introductions and telling about your family schpiel. So I go around asking everyone how many people they have in their family and who they are. Eventually I get to this older woman at the back who looks to be in her late 30s, possibly early 40s, but very attractive, nice body, great skin, charming personality and pretty much awesome as far as I can tell. I'm expecting her to say something like 5 or six people in her family (parents in law, husband, one or two kids), but she answers, "Three". Just her, her mum and her brother. I smile and leave it at that, but all the time I'm thinking: WTF? How is she not married?
Teaching adults I often meet older women in their 30s or 40s that have never been married or who's husband cheated on them and then resulted in divorce and now they've been "left out to pasture", and it boggles my mind. They're the kind of women that back in a western country they would be inundated with very eligible gentleman callers. We even have two female teachers at the school in the same position, one in her early 30s and one in her 40s, and they're both awesome. Both have one boy, the one is divorced and the other is separated (husband no longer wants to be with her, but he's a career army officer and doesn't want to give a divorce, and if she pushes for it will refuse to support their child financially). The older one is still so bloody hot it's hard to put into words (think Gong Li, but as an English teacher), and the younger one I nicknamed Rock Chick, because she always comes to work in grungy gear with awesome music T-shirts. Having spent time with both socially (Friday lunches some of us get together sometimes), I can vouch they're both brilliant women. Yet there they are, in Taiwan, on the shelf.

Some of those late 30s women are there by choice. Some Taiwanese women have their standards and aren't willing to budge and are looking to marry up. Maybe statistically there just aren't enough eligible men to meet the standards of all of those women.

But yes, there is a large pool of eligible 30 something women in Taiwan that is not being tapped, literally.

Teddoman: There is definitely a problem with women wanting to marry up. In an age when men and women have similar levels of education and can make similar levels of money, there simply won't be a large enough pool of men for every woman. I believe that's part of why there are so many guys who end up getting wives from abroad (usually China or Southeast Asia).
