My god Jim, it's toothpaste and they're basically using the N word on their branding - use frickin Colgate for christ sake!

We're not talkin about a $10,000 purchase or warmin your undies in the microwave for that toasty feeling around the family jewels and hey-ho...

I really liked that you called me Jim. I don't suppose you're familiar with the good people at Alcoholics Anonymous? Or Infinite Jest?

Oh, but I see your point. I could -- and probably will -- switch brands. My point was that I didn't even notice. Like, why would I care what's on the outside of a tube of toothpaste?

I understand the makers of "black man " toothpaste admired the then belief that black people had beautiful white teeth (may just be because of the contrast) and thus "black man" toothpaste was born. It wasn't intended as an insult or to be racist (even if that observation itself would be seen by todays PC police as being the essence of racism itself).

Yeahhhhh I'm sure the Asian focus group were thinking "wow those black folks have wonderful teeth, so attractive". Talk about historical revisionism (not by your illustrious self), what a crock. Anyone who's been in Asia longer than 5 minutes knows how the vast majority of Asians feel about black people... they put the guy in a frickin top hat for cryin out loud!!! With black-face!

Then you probably haven't had enough coffee today. Image It's not overtly racist, but there is something there I think. Coffee is black, they have 3 types of coffee, and have used 3 famous black guys.

Yeah, they could just be honoring these guys, sticking 3 famous black guys on their product. But it irks me when people say it's okay, just as it irks me when people tell me Taiwanese people who stare at foreigners aren't being racist.

I'll admit it's not as horrifying as Darlie toothpaste, which used to be called Darkie toothpaste before 1985.

Well, the coffee and the toothpaste aren't really the same thing. In any event, I use this toothpaste.

The only thing really wrong with the coffee is that Mandela, Pele and Obama aren't getting royalties for their names being used.

Thing is, originally Darlie was called Darkie, which can't be construed as anything but nasty. Calling it Blackman toothpaste (like the other one, whiteman toothpaste) is somewhat different from the old "Darkie" moniker. And let's be honest, the new picture is ok (could even be a white dude in a top hat and tux), but the old picture was truly horrible playing on racial stereotypical facial features etc.

However, the coffee doesn't seem to have anything dodgy on it (picture or name wise), and even comes with a flag of the person in question's country.

well back in the day (when there were only 17 million people on the rock) black man toothpastes biggest competitor was Kolynos (my mom preferred this over black man toothpaste). Looks like they are owned nowadays by colgate as well. I guess you could switch to CREST.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolynos

You can use the german made Oral-B toothpaste available in Taiwan. Good stuff.
