Ai Weiwei any good?

Postby rogerthat » 17 Feb 2012, 11:58

Went to the Ai Weiwei exhibition a while ago and was thoroughly unimpressed. For once, the disappointed-art-museum-visitor reaction ("a chimpanzee could do that") seemed to have some truth to it. Can someone please explain: What's so great about him? Or is he really just mediocre but no one dares say so for fear of being considered in cahoots with China's leaders?

What's so good about many other 'artists'?

He's famous because he had the idea for building the 'birds nest' Olympic building in Beijing, that was his breakthrough ... and because he's outspoken against the communist party, he also has some kind of open co-operative for artists in Beijing, working with a German investor I believe (or is he Belgian?)...
