Copts were persecuted just as much by Nasser and his free officers, by Sadat and by Mubarak. While I'm displeased by the strong showing of Salafists and the Muslim Brotherhood, I think the threat of the Salafists gaining more representation in the upcoming elections in the Southern regions will moderate the MB into coalition building with the moderate and liberal parties. After all, they are more moderate than the Salafist party and more pragmatic.

I see that there are TWO Islamic parties, one of them apparently more fundamentalist than the other. Does this suggest the existence of nuances unsuspected by the Jewish and Christian right...perhaps even room for negotiation...? (Think of Turkey's AKP.)
