Must see documentary ... the US crisis, change, localization

Postby Belgian Pie » 20 Jun 2012, 19:23

This is a documentary from a Dutch production house about the changes US people are making, localizing and taking care of their own neighborhood, city, county. Blamed are the big industry, federal politicians and lobbyists ...

It's 99% in English ...

Just to let you know, when I go to that web page I get this message (in Dutch, but translated below into English):

You don't have Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 which is required to watch this video. Download Silverlight...

I've never seen such a message before. I don't have Windows, so I can't install Silverlight, nor would I anyway. Actually, I think it's kind of ironic that a documentary video called "Off The Grid" (which I assume urges localization and blames big business and lobbyists for our current societal ills) requires me to install proprietary Microsoft software to watch it, when there are perfectly free and open standards (ie HTML5, which Youtube uses).

Can't find the Doc. somewhere else, but in the left lower corner of the embedded XML videoplayer, you can either select Silverlight or Flash for playback.
PS.Silverlight is as normal as any other extension nowadays. Can be installed on MAC also. Harmless.

Watched the first 5 minutes of the Doc - looks interesting .

It's an interesting documentary
You have the choice to view in Flash or Silverlight ... I have no idea if they still support WMV, they did until recently.

When the page opens look for the word 'instellingen' which roughly means 'preferences or options' there you can change to Flash and the quality.

Also, turn on cookies for the site for storage of the preferences.

Here's another link but only in silverlight ... http://www.hollanddoc.nl/kijk-luister/d ... -grid.html

Interesting ... just watching the Silverlight version now.

I just finished reading "Better Off" by Eric Brende - a typical suburbanite guy goes to do a bit of immersion anthropology in an "Amish" community and ends up becoming (almost) a convert. The interesting part about this book is the description of the local economy, and the very modest amount of work required to sustain a sparse community in a lifestyle which isn't even close to poverty. Although emergency services and suchlike need a certain level of technology to work properly, it's surprising how successful this kind of off-the-grid living can be.

Just saw the trailer. If they're using material from Alex Jones you know it's going to be out there. As a person he's very often in la la land with his conspiracy ideas, yet absolutely bang on often enough to make you wonder about the rest.

Sandpoint Idaho is an area famous for white supremists and nazis. I grew up in Idaho near a similar area, on weekends we used to go into the hills where loads of survivalists would gather to practice their rifle skills. As a child, I never thought much about that sort of activity.

I do believe there is a big reset coming, and in the not too distant future we'll make the right decisions, or become eternal debt slaves.

I wonder how many federal and state and private foundation grants are involved in "localization" and "community development." Well, when we have so many important people serving as community organizers and now "localizers" is there any doubt that restoration and rehabilitation of America are on the horizon. After all, these types of efforts have been taking place for YEARS in Detroit and we all see what a shining city on the hill that city is. Right?!

If you watch the video, fred, none at all. It seems to be mostly individuals who are sick of the government and big institutions who have decided (or been forced to) go it alone. OK, there are a couple of survivalists there talking about gas masks, but most of the people in the video seem fairly sane. Have a look, if you haven't already - I think you'll find it interesting.
