I just did as well, about a month ago. It's nice not having to sift through mundane posts about what people ate for dinner, what housework they did, things their children said, etc. every day!

I have three techniques to preserving my identity on Facebook
1) I have my name in a foreign language that not too many people can read
2) My profile picture does not have my face but rather some sort of mundane symbol
3) I have my security settings set to the highest level possible
People sometimes ask me "why do you have your account so weird?" The answer is simple, I don't want something as simple as Facebook to interfere with my life, career, relationships, etc.
Besides, those people I add are good friends so they won't mind/care about my extra stringent security settings.
