Advice For Your Children - What Would It Be?

Postby Timabee » 29 May 2012, 21:57

If you could give your children just 3 pieces of advice/guidance what would your advice/guidance be? Just to get things rolling...I suggest (1) Responsibility; (2) Respect and (3) Restraint. Responsibility for what you have done (i.e. be accountable) and what you should do as a friend, neighbor, citizen. Respect for self and for others. Restraint in thought and action - even when you are absolutely in the right give yourself (and others) some space to breathe.

I don't know if it counts as advice, but I am constantly working on getting my kids to know the difference between happiness/momentary gratification and contentment. I guess the advice I try to give is, try to look within yourself rather than at others, to decide whether you are content or not. I think this is relevant to our children's lives considering all the outside forces they have to contend with on a daily basis.

Only 3? For all time?
:ponder:
1. Do not neglect long term strategy in favour of short term tactics.
2. Take it easy. And, if it's easy: take it again.
3. If you're incompetent, you have to be honest. If you're crooked you have to be clever. If you are adept, you have to run silent, and run deep.

I'd stick with:
Live in the present. Enjoy when you have to, grieve if you have to, work like mad when you have to, this is all you have. The present. Don't put off things for later, or keep living in the past or the future. Living in the past means holding grudges, hurts etc. and living in the future means you are skipping the present. Your life is here and now.

If I had children:

Follow your dreams.
Don't harm others.
Don't eat yellow snow.

Currently we're at:
"How many times have I told you? Don't wipe your mouth on your sleeve when you're eating!"

Have to get around to something more worldly than that.
It's raining again here. I'm rising up like a beautiful bubble to the surface.

A wicked wind whips up the hill, a handful of hopeful words.
