this doesn't make any sense at all. maybe just an excuse that they had to close the place for other reasons?
Most of the chinese restaurants here show cable news all day or at least play some radio.

well, OP doesn't mention but it's a gay area-all or most of the bars through there behind the Red Theater are of that persuasion, so there's probably a mix of reasons and it can't really be compared to a normal Taiwan situation. I'm not going to even hazard a guess why.

EDIT: Poagao, the whole area is gay-so there are probably complicated protection issues that are not comparable to typical Taiwan businesses. Maybe you could shed some light on why/how the whole area has been given the green light to allow gay shops to open. Quite interesting, considering it's such a traditional area.

I call bullshit.

The article the OP linked to is another article entirely, about copyright law, but NOTHING to do with any sort of burger joint.

Its still a f*cked up story, but one similar to John Fogerty's court battle. (CCR dude)

As I said, I linked to that as a reference to how MUST operates, and it's the same group involved here. I don't think it has anything to do with gay issues either, as there is a gay sauna located upstairs that seems to be doing ok. I guess they paid their protection fees.

can you elaborate on this 'ask for a contract through them' technique?

A few years ago a foreigner I knew with a restaurant/pub got a visit from them with a stern warning and threats of gazillion dollar lawsuits if he didn't pay up. BTW, this foreigner was using his computer for the source of music. We clearly argued that they had no 'jurisdiction'.

I played the mediator/translator role and softly mentioned that any kind of agreement would be clearly stated on paper. Of which they denied not needing and never showed up again.
In Taiwan the only thing put on paper is what remains from your ass. When in Rome....
