There are 2 kinds of Malt drinks - sweetened and unsweetened. The sweetened Malz stuff (available at all big supermarkets here) will make you retch. The unsweetened stuff is actually vaguely beer-ish and drinkable. Good luck telling the difference if you can't read Chinese.

7-Elevens used to stock Asahi "Zero" alcohol-free beer a few years ago, and then it just disappeared one day. Shame, because it was actually pretty good.
