Despite what has been said elsewhere on the forum, I think the International Trade Institute (ITI) is a great place to work if you are looking for full-time adult English teaching and cannot get into the university system (due to their bizarre PhD requirements). ITI has a day-time program in Hsinchu and a night-time program in Taipei.

I am not sure if they are hiring at the moment (they normally put ads on TEALIT).

Full disclosure: I worked at ITI in Hsinchu from 2006-2008.

List of radioactive buildings in Northern Taiwan:
http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/a34610078/archive?l=f&id=38

Some of the ones in my old neighborhood are very famous, like the Minsheng Villas on Longjiang Road. Others have been demolished and replaced by temples or new buildings. A lot are still standing.

Plugging any of these addresses into the "Radioactive Building Verification Site" (which belongs to the AEC) yields no useful information, but I don't believe that's relevant since even Minsheng Villas do not appear to be in their list.

So the building in question can't be found on those lists?

The building in question is listed on the blog I linked to; those lists are "Publicly Announced Radioactive Buildings in Taiwan".

NONE of those buildings seem to show up on the AEC's site for checking radioactive buildings, including those which are famously known to be radioactive. Minsheng Villas is where the whole scandal began. That building also has a gigantic banner outside hung there by former residents informing passers-by of the nature of the site.

Global Village's website lists the address as 台北市南京東路三段301號1-3樓 for their Dunhua Branch.

The list of radioactive buildings in the Songshan district ( http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/a34610078/ar ... l=f&fid=38 ) lists all four floors of that building as contaminated at items 50 through 53.

Visiting the building shows that it is indeed a four-floor structure of approximately the right age to be part of the contaminated building scandal.

I own a small school called "Best Language School" in Taizhong city. I value my employees. Although I can't provide a full time teaching position at the moment, I do have an extra ARC available for the right candidate. I have adults and children as well as outside contracts at schools, businesses, etc. I also have a lot of other work, editing , recording, etc. I customize classes and they are always small, average is 4, maximum 8. Pay is negotiable. I teach as many of the classes as a i can, but need to hire a new teacher. I currently employ 3 teachers.
In the coming months I hope to land some more business clients and send teachers to them.

Most of us are just riding it out. I'm actually doing well (paying the bills, traveling and saving for a wedding) but my fairly small business English company seems to really, REALLY want to keep me and is giving me the hours to get me to stick around. My colleagues are also mostly riding it out, and all of us are making rent, though some are only just barely getting there.

My fiance is looking to jump ship, however. His hours are crap for no reason we can discern; he's just as good a teacher as I am, albeit with a different style. He's looking around and talking to another place later this week.

[bump!]

Its been about 6 months since the last post and I am interested in getting fresh posts/observations here.

On a personal note, I am in the process of cutting loose and leaving Japan as I write this. Hope to hit TW in Sept.

Can't speak for the north, but down south, especially Tainan) it's worse, if anything. Hoping it's going to get better in the next year or so, or I'm going to have to make some tough decisions.

Edit: I should also mention that most people that are doing well (or getting there) have something going on on the side. Some sort of business or trying to get something off the ground.
