Nutrition label help, please!

Postby Stray Dog » 02 Jun 2009, 15:13

Can anyone help me translate the nutrition label on food items? Which is sugar, fat, calories, etc.? I speak Chinese like a British native but can't read for toffee.

Thank you in advance!

You forgot to post a large, clear picture of the label.

He wrote three proper sentences. That's a lot to ask of Stray Dog.

The items on each label are pretty much the same (the numbers I can translate myself  ).

Two rules are all you need:

A. If it has a label, it has no nutrition.

B. If it has a stem, roots, or teeth, it does.

Great! That's a big help. Thanks, DB!

What's 'sugar'? I'm trying to cut down on the sweet stuff. :D

Sugar is 糖 tang2, but that only tends to get listed in the ingredient list, sometimes broken down or disguised, as in English, in its various forms (dried grape extract? Gimme a break!). Fortunately, just like with the -ose ending in English, you get a tang2 ending in Mandarin, so you can recognize them. It doesn't tend to get broken down in the nutritional info charts. Grabbing a jar of Skippy for instance, ingredient #2 is sugar, even before vegetable oil (no surprise if you've tasted it), but you won't see a breakdown in % or grams per portion.

Are you looking at any particular variety of product, or just trying to learn to read labels in general? You can customize your Mandarin study to ingredients and labels, if that's what you're interested in. Although there's a wide variety of ingredients in products, a huge amount of that is repeated, so you can quickly learn how to recognize palm oil, sugar, maltose, MSG and so on.

One of my biggest gripes with products here is the palm oil in all the crackers and baked stuff. So it's worth learning to recognize 棕櫚油 zong1lǚ3you2, palm oil, which contributes to heart disease.
