Need recommendations for river tracing in Hualian

I'm planning a trip to Hualian and I have set aside one day for river tracing. There seems to be so many choices, but I only have enough time to go to one.

I've done river tracing twice around Hsinchu and Miaoli. I'm a decent swimmer, shit poor diver.

For those who have went on one such adventure, which do you consider to be the most scenic?

I'm looking for it to be an half day exercise, with difficulty of D or below. I think I'd be petty thrilled even with an A difficulty. I mostly want to enjoy the scenery.

So far I gathered there's:

Sgadan (砂卡礑)
Qingshuixi (清水溪)
Feicuigu (翡翠谷)
Baibaoxi (白鮑溪)

Any suggestion would be appreciated, thanks.

They're all scenic. You've probably got them listed in order of natural beauty, but there's not so much to choose between them.

Sgadan (砂卡礑)
Bit of a walk in to any deep water or swimming holes, now that the trail is under repair.

Qingshuixi (清水溪)
Not sure you can get in there at the moment. There's a stand-off from the locals after mainland excess numbers.

Feicuigu (翡翠谷)
I like this. Take a flashlight for the opening tunnel, and walk the trail above the river for the first 1km or so. Then trace.

Baibaoxi (白鮑溪)
Also nice, though never traced it. Some good swimming if the water is up.

thanks for the advise, I've biked along 白鮑溪 before and it indeed is very scenic. I guess I'll try. feicuigu or baibaoxi.

You might want to contact Matt of Hualian Outdoors (www.hualienoutdoors.org). We met him last week and he knows everything about river tracing in Hualian. You better join a group, anyway, better not underestimate the dangers of river tracing in Taiwan.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check that out. Always planned on joining a group, I am not where as skilled to be attempting it alone.

Hualian outdoors was booked the second time I checked with them, so I wasn't able to go with them. I eventually went with a local river tracing tour group. All their coaches are Pangcah or Truku. The two coaches I had were very warm and upbeat, and loved to share their stories. The trip went to Mqmgi (慕谷慕魚), which involved a 3km uphill hike before getting to the starting point. I tagged along with another family, who opted for a half day trip, so it was pretty easy. The view was nice, and water was cool, and I had a great time. They highly recommended doing the full day Mqmgi tour, or Gold Gorge (黃金峽谷) at San-zhan 三棧 for a more challenging experience.

I only see this post now
Anyways, for all you out there that want to give Mugumuyu and other trails a shot, detailed info on how to get there and permits (if necessary) can be found on the Facebook page Living Hualian.
We go hiking from time to time and put the info up on there for all to share. It's a good place to go if you got a question or just wanna hangout.

It has been 5 years since I made it to Hualian and Taroko so I am going to make it a point to make it there this fall. I just need to make a 3 day weekend to make it worth it because of awful travel logistics from KHH. I guess I was in Hualian overnight on a cycling trip (and 4 years ago) but that doesn't really count since I was not sightseeing.

Just to add onto this two of the top river traces that I know of are the Golden Grotto (Hansioux mentions it) and Nanao/Jinyue over an hour north of Hualian. I have done Nanao before (several years ago) http://theworldisnotthatbig.com/2012/08 ... dventures/ and it was awesome. Golden Grotto is talked about a lot as a great river trace and it is near the top of my list. My understanding is that it is tough to get a permit unless you are there right away in the morning (weekends). 1st come 1st serve each day?

I will also need to check out these others sometime.
